언어학에서 논의된 초기의 어휘부는 불규칙한 대상을 처리하기 위한 주변적인 영역에 불과하였다. 그러나 문장 연구와 차별화된 방식으로 단어 연구가 깊이를 더하고, 이른바 인지형태론의 등장과 함께 문법 단위의 저장에 관한 연구가 본격화되면서 어휘부는 단어형성론의 핵심적인 연구 대상으로 주목을 받게 된다. 특히 한국어 단어형성론은 1990년대 이후 ‘규칙론-유추론’ 간의 활발한 토론을 거치면서 문법 내 어휘부의 위상과 모형, 등재 단위의 배열 양상 등 다각적인 내용으로 논의가 확장, 발전되어 왔다. 이 글에서는 ‘형성과 등재’, ‘최소 등재와 완전 등재’, ‘결합과 대치’, ‘등재소 연결망(어휘적 연결 관계)’의 하위 주제를 대상으로 삼아, 기존 연구에서 쟁점이 될 만한 사항을 중심으로 논의하였다.

중세어에는 겉으로는 의존 동사(보조 용언)처럼 보이는 ‘지라’가 사실은 의존 동사가 아니고 선행하는 동사 표지 ‘거/어/나’와 함께 특수한 평술형을 형성한다고 보고 고영근(2020가)에서는 이를 “소망 평술형”으로 처리하였다. 이 환경에서 실현되는 ‘거/어/나’는, 고영근(1980/1999: 457)에서 밝힌 바와 같이, 동사 표지이지 결코 학교 문법의 보조적 연결 어미가 아니다. 중세어의 보조적 연결어미에는 ‘-어/-아, -게/긔, -디(ᄃᆞᆯ), -고’ 밖에 없다. 그런데 임홍빈(2020)에서는 동사 표지 ‘거/어/나’를 ‘거어/어어/나아’의 축약으로 보고 ‘지라’를 의존 동사(보조용언)로 보고 있다. 축약으로 본다면 성조 문제를 언급해야 하는데 임홍빈(2020)에서는 이에 대한 언급이 전혀 없다. 필자가 고영근(2020가)에서 문제를 제기할 때에는 동사 형태부의 성조에 관한 정보도 수집하였으나 직접 관계가 없기 때문에 생략하였다. 그런데 임홍빈(2020)에서는 그에 대한 언급은 하지 않고 직관적으로 축약이라고 하였다. 오늘 이 자리에서는 고영근(2020가)에서 보류해 둔 성조 문제를 다룸으로써 ‘거/어/나지라’가 결코 축약형이 아님을 증명하여 보이려고 한다. 이와 함께 형태소의 분석과 기능 문제도 다룸으로써 ‘거/어’의 본질 문제에 다가서려고 한다.

본 논문은 20세기 초에 존재했던 조용사(助用詞)를 중심으로 그와 관련된 품사들을 비교하였다. 조용사는 이완응(1929)과 박승빈(1931, 1935, 1937)에서 볼 수 있는데 동사나 형용사에 접속하는 방법과 하위 분류 체계에서 차이점이 있다. 그러나 이들은 동사나 형용사의 원래 의미에 특별한 의미를 더하는 기능을 가지고 있으며, 시제와 경어법 체계를 보여주는 공통점이 있다. 한편 조용사보다 앞 시기에 존재했던 조동사는 일본 문법의 영향을 받아 시제와 서법을 나타내고 양태적인 의미를 보여주는 품사였다. 특히 박승빈의 조용사는 현재의 국어문법에서 시제와 존경의 선어말어미, 사동과 피동 접사와 일치하는 부분이 많다. 그러나 최현배(1937)에서 이들을 보조어간으로 규정하여 이후에는 조용사를 문법서에 하나의 품사로 기술하는 일이 거의 없게 되었다. 조용사는 짧은 시간 존재하였지만 용언 어간에 결합하는 형식들을 더욱 세밀하게 기술할 수 있게 해 준 품사라는 점에서 큰 의의가 있다.

이 연구에서는 심리어휘부 관련 연구 주제를 심리적 실재성을 강조하면서 탐구한 연구들을 살펴보고 성과와 의의, 한계와 과제에 대해 논의한다. 심리어휘부 연구 중에는 연구 결과를 도출할 때 이론과 머릿속 언어 지식의 일치 여부를 고려해야 한다고 보는 연구들이 있다. 이 연구들의 ‘실제’에 대한 강조의 배경, 주장과 논증 구조, 근거 자료 수집 방법 등을 정리하고 연구가 밝힌 바, 이러한 연구의 가치, 보완해야 할 점, 나아갈 방향에 대해 생각해 본다. 국어 형태론의 서로 다른 이론들이 논쟁하는 과정에서 어휘부에 대한 본격적 탐구가 필요해지면서 심리적 실재성을 강조하는 연구 흐름이 생겨났고, 조어 기제와 어휘부 양상의 심리적 실재성을 증명하기 위한 여러 시도들이 있었다. 탐구 대상의 성격상 어휘부와 관련된 주장은 치밀하게 논증하기가 매우 어렵다. 근거 마련의 어려움에 대한 타개책으로 생각된 것이 실험심리학적 연구를 통한 실제적 증거 수집 및 인지 체계 전반에서의 근거 확인이라는 연구 방법론적 지향이다. 어휘부 연구들이 근거를 다방면으로 모색한 결과 심리어휘부에 대한 주장들에 국어학적 사실에 대한 논증으로서의 가치를 점차 더 많이 부여할 수 있게 되었고 근거 마련 방식도 다양해졌다. 쟁점이 되는 문제들을 해결할 구체적인 방법을 고안하는 것, 자료 수집 방법을 정교화하고 자료를 대표성 있게 하는 것 등은 과제로 남는다.

The Hallyu (Korean Wave) boom that started with TV dramas in the 2000s expanded to various cultural areas, including food and music. As Korean culture gained popularity, Hallyu fans in Japan began to adopt Korean vocabulary like loan words. To study this phenomenon, the author collected vocabulary used by K-pop fans of native Japanese speakers and classified them by type. It was found that most of these words were currently being borrowed and used in their original Korean form; however, there were also words created by combining Korean words with Japanese words or newly coined by combining Korean words. Once Korean K-pop vocabulary becomes more established in Japan, it is expected that more words will emerge that originate from Korean but are independently created and used exclusively by Japanese speakers.

To check the linguistic features of the interviews from the humidifier disinfectant victims, the research compared the interviews with the modern spoken corpus and analyzed them in respect of vocabulary and grammar. The results are as follows. First, a common point was deduced by the lexical metaphor that the relationship between the informants and their companion animals, the victims of the case, is as close as a family member. The result is very meaningful, in that it is very rare that the materials of the lexical metaphor provide and predict the relationship between humans and companion animals. Second, the actuality of the semi-formal talk was well revealed by the grammatical feature, in terms of many fragmentary sentences and frequent uses of the ‘-haeyo’ style. However, certain types of conclusive endings such as ‘-keodeunyo’, ‘-jyo’, or ‘-jahnayo’, which are used by the speaker s assumption on the state of hearer s knowledge, were frequently used compared to the modern spoken corpus. The features of these conclusive endings assuming hearer s knowledge and ignorance show that the linguistic materials of informants implicate their intent to inform the society of the case and to get recognition from the society.

From a conversation analytic perspective, this paper undertakes the sequential analysis of students oral reading initiated by teachers during teacher-student interaction. Extracted from 14 Korean elementary school EFL lessons collected on video, the sequences that contain teachers initiation and students reading and the surrounding talk were closely examined. The major finding is that students oral reading serves a range of instructional purposes: practicing through repetition, marking closure, preparing for what is about to unfold, collaborating in knowledge presentation, rendering key linguistic information, and presenting and checking students written work. Based on this observation, this paper argues that students oral reading predominantly occurs as part of or in conjunction with a larger instructional activity, rather than with an exclusive instructional focus.

The purpose of this study is to reveal through discourse analysis the processes and patterns in which discrimination and hate in Korean society is produced. The social aspect of discrimination and hatred is practiced and reproduced through discourse. Discourses related to dogs were selected for this inquiry, because discrimination and hatred against dogs, especially large dogs today, are confirmed through various discourse(language sources) of the media. For this critical discourse study, van Dijk s approach, emphasizing the cognitive component when exploring the relationship between discourse and society, was applied. As a result of the analysis, it was identified that the polarized distinction between ‘we’ group and ‘they’ groups according to categorization, discrimination based on prejudice and stereotypes, and hatred due to contemptuous attitudes were sequentially developed. And it was found that the division and discrimination were represented and reproduced through the discourse at the macro-level of society, and the hate was represented through the discourse at the micro-level.

This study examined the linguistic backgrounds and dialectal characteristics of Changnyeong and Dalseong regions, which are located in the transitional area between Gyeongsangnam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do. It was confirmed that the language of each region was not severed but share many commonness based on various characteristics found in the transitional area existing discussions and field surveys, As a result, 19 (18) consonants were realized by elderly people and 19 by young people in Changnyeong and Dalseong regions. In the case of vowels, six by elderly people and Seven vowels by young people. Also, it was investigated that language variations, such as Word-initial Glottalization, palatalization, and umlaut, were more active in the Changnyeong region than Dalseong region. The difference between these three variations can be attributed to the perceptions and attitudes of older speakers.

The aim of this study is to analyze the research trend of speech acts in Korean language. This study targets 371 master s and doctoral dissertations published from 1985 to 2020. These papers are analyzed according to the year of publication, type of paper, type of speech act, research topic, subject of research, and data collection method. As a result of the analysis, research related to speech acts in Korean have been diversified in terms of topics, subjects of research, and data collection methods along with a quantitative increase. However, three directions are proposed for the development of the study of speech acts in Korean language. First, subjects of research need to be diversified in terms of their learning environment and proficiency. Second, in order to analyze the actual use of language, it is required to collect data close to actual conversation. Lastly, longitudinal studies are needed to research Korean language learners development or acquisition of Korean language.

This study probes how cultural contents are represented in middle school English textbooks based on the 2015 revised national curriculum. To this end, culture-related sections of 15 textbooks were analyzed in terms of five aspects: cultural subject matters, cultural types, backgrounds, activities for cultural learning, and language integration. The results reveal that the middle school textbooks deal with everyday life of various cultures, including tasks for introducing Korean culture. The three culture types are provided at a relatively balanced ratio, but as the grade goes up, the portion of spiritual culture increases whereas that of material culture decreases. As for cultural background, non-English cultures in the outer and expanding circle are the most frequently presented. In the analysis of cultural learning activities, searching and communication activities connected to speaking and writing have a large portion, but experiential activities are rare. 45.5% of cultural activities are presented in a single communication skill and 54.5% of them are integrated into two or more skills. Finally, based on the study results, some suggestions for effective culture education to attract students spontaneous participation in middle school English classes are presented.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the term ‘agassi’ by analyzing the pattern of actual language use of it in the aspect of sociolinguistic perspective. Through this work, it will be possible to figure out the change of meaning of the ‘agassi’, and the causes of conflict situations of using it in modern society. In chapter 2, the difference between ‘agassi’ as an address term and as a reference term is represented. Chapter 3 shows the chronicle change in the use of ‘agassi’ being originated from its etymology, ‘agissi’. It turns out that the use of ‘agassi’ has evolved for in the order of Honorific form, kinship and Non-Honorific form. Chapter 4 investigates the tendency and its cause of the negative interpretation of ‘agassi’ in modern society. The reason why the address term ‘agassi’ causes social displeasure is because it is regarded as ‘sexual objectification’. It can be subdivided into three categories: ‘agassi’ is (1) the expression that emphasis sex in social life, (2) associated with specific occupational groups which is socially unacceptable, and (3) used often in the situation of sexual harassment.

There have been numerous refugee-related studies in linguistics following a large inflow of refugees to South Korea over the past several years. However, many studies address refugees in terms of Korean language education, and little has been discussed on the actual language use of refugees or linguistic issues they experience in South Korea. Linguistic research regarding refugees must be conducted not only with regard to Korean language education but also in terms of observing and interpreting the actual language use of and social issues experienced by refugees. In this respect, this study notes the issues faced by refugees moving to South Korea without knowledge of the Korean language. Specifically, it addresses communication issues arising within the limited space of the airport entry and departure port. To this end, two Arabic speakers applying for refugee recognition at the airport entry and departure port were interviewed. As such, procedures that must be taken at the entry and departure port between exiting the airplane and entering South Korea were reconstructed from an insider s perspective, and communication issues occurring throughout each procedure were reviewed. Subsequently, suggestions were made to ensure the language human rights of refugees at airports.

English globalization entails the use of English by speakers from mother tongues other than English. Trained and professional non-native speakers of English have reportedly achieved communicative competence owing to bilingual or multilingual experiences. Their pragmatic competence developed through diverse interactions with speakers from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds (Kecskes 2015). In this study, hedges were explored in international briefings where English was used as a lingua franca by professionals of an organization. Three hedging devices including modal verbs, modal adverbs, and pronouns were analyzed to investigate their pragmatic competence. In addition, the professional non-native English briefings were compared with the U.S. briefings for their similarities and differences. Results showed developmental patterns from learner English while they shared similarities with native data. These findings were accounted for by the varieties of English and the genre differences. Implications for pragmatic competence are discussed as well.

This study examined the research on “media language” published in ≪Social Linguistics≫ from the first issue to Volume 27(4) in the viewpoint of research history. First, the media s language was divided into ‘newspaper language’, ‘broadcasting language’ and ‘communication language’ and the published papers were classified by period. Then each paper s achievements were analyzed over time. After analyzing detailed research topics and approaches for each media language and their main flow, individual papers contents were reviewed. According to analysis results, the communication language research was most actively carried out during the same period. In the media language studies, he discussions were largely concerned with discourse analysis. discourse analysis. The communication language has also changed its aspect according to the change of the hardware and platform on which the communication is based. Media language research so far has focused on individual characteristics according to the unique properties of each medium. However recently, as 3 media such as newspapers, broadcasting and the Internet have been integrated into one, the media language research needs to be discussed from the viewpoint of “language integration.”

This paper analyzes the research progress of language attitudes in the field of sociolinguistics and proposes future research projects. First, the research progress of language attitudes can be categorized into four groups; attitudes to the language itself, attitudes to language variation, attitudes to language use, and attitudes to language identity. Research about attitudes to the language itself is peculiar in that big scale surveys were conducted by the government for linguistic policies. Quantitative survey method is preferable when providing the results in figures. However, it is unsuitable when analyzing the results in depth. Therefore, qualitative research entailed with various research methods is necessary. Research on attitudes toward language variation should be promoted considering the fast speed of linguistic change of the Korean language. So far most studies were about umlaut, euphony, grammatical change in stem and ending. Nevertheless, further studies should expand the research horizon to different linguistic units such as intonation, discourse markers, etc. Research on attitudes toward language use shows the possibility of extending the scope of the field of sociolinguistics. Especially study on anthroponym, commercials, brand names, copies, political slogans should not only be done on language attitudes but also on sociolinguistic respects. Lastly, research on language attitudes of minority groups focused on Korean migrants to Japan(Korean residents in Japan), former Soviet Union(Russian Koreans), and China(Korean-Chinese). However, at present Korea is a multicultural society which implicates that future studies should pay more attention on minority groups of different mother tongues for example immigrant workers, international students, temporary visitors, overseas Chinese, and foreigners who acquired Korean nationality, as well as North Korean defectors and migrant wives.

The interest in text mining is recently increasing in the humanities and social sciences. Using a topic-modeling technique, this study analyzed a corpus of study abroad applications to explore a discursive field of study abroad. By doing so, this project finds the ways in which the new text analysis technique can contribute to the methodology of discourse analysis. For this purpose, 4,585 applications for a variety of undergraduate study-abroad programs were collected and sorted out into the corpora of successful and unsuccessful applications. The topic-modeling results show that generated topics generally match the discourses and themes that the existing research of study abroad have considered so far. The comparison of the results between successful and unsuccessful applications reveals that the former tends to exhibit a set of more clearly defined topics and use abstract and generalized words to describe actions engaging with study abroad. This study suggests that the topic-modeling technique can be a useful discourse-analytic tool as it helps understand a broad thematic and discursive terrain in a large size of textual data. This paper also discusses how traditional discourse analysis methods can contribute to addressing methodological limitations in text mining techniques.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical overview of the discourse-analytic studies in Korean sociolinguistics, mainly analyzing articles published in The Sociolingustic Journal of Korea. To achieve this goal, this article discusses definitions of ‘discourse’ and ‘discourse analysis’, and approaches to discourse. The examination of the articles in the journal shows that major studies in Korean sociolinguistics can be summarized as in the following: (i) functional approaches to language and discourse markers, (ii) conversation analysis and interactional linguistics, (iv) media discourse and critical discourse analysis, (v) analysis of public speeches and advertisements, (vi) electronic discourse (internet and SNS discourse), among others. This overview shows that discourse-analytic studies in Korean linguistics have focused on certain specific topics such as discourse markers, conversation-analytic studies, critical discourse studies, and electronic discourse, differing in topics from sociolinguistic studies in American and other societies. This overview suggests that more sociolinguistic studies need to be carried out in the fields such as intercultural communication, electronic discourse, and gender-based discourse as further research topics in Korean sociolinguistics.
