This study has concentrated on the development of the non-farming sector and the modernization of rural areas in China andin particular on the rural enterprise growth which has taken place in Guangdongsheng since 1980. Below are some conclusions.
First, the development of the non-forming sector in rural areas is an important way to change the present economic structure and promote rural modernization. By the end of 2001. more than 60 percent of the Chinese rural economy had become non agricultural, of which rural industry accounted for over two third. By the end of 2001. the rural enterprise proportion of industrial output in
Guangdongsheng had increased from 31 percent in 1985 to 58 percent.
Second, the contribution of rural enterprises to growth in
Guangdongsheng increased rapidly after 1985. By the end of the 2001. rural enterprises accounted for more than two third of Guangdongsheng GDP growth.
Third, rural enterprises in Guangdongsheng have followed a different path of development to that of state enterprises. They have tended to specialize in more labour-intensive activities. such as building material. textiles and other light manufacturing.
Four, rural enterprises in Guangdongsheng has found it absolutely necessary to seck close international cooperation in the realm of export and overseas direct invertment. as well as in the sphere of capital and technology. There were also the source of interest among foreign investors which further added to their export growth.
The growth of rural enterprises was therefore a vital e1ement in the structural changes associated with growth in Guangdongsheng as well as China, and alter in the transition from present system to a more market-oriented economy.
