[Purpose] This study aims to investigate the research trends in the field of cross-border higher education in China through analysis of academic journals published in China from 1998 to 2020.

[Purpose] This study aims to investigate the research trends in the field of cross-border higher education in China through analysis of academic journals published in China from 1998 to 2020.
[Methods] To achieve this goal, the study carried out semantic network analysis using research keywords, as well as the frequency analysis with the analysis criteria including publication years, research methods, research themes, and research purposes.
[Results] The historical development process as well as the evolvement of the research trends and the focus of this topic over time were presented. Two developmental stages in this research field were revealed: emergence stage (1998-2007) and rapid development stage (2008-2020). The changes in the hotspots of this research field are largely boosted by national policies. It was also found that most of the studies centered on overviews and trends. However, at the micro level, teachers and students as a research focus are insufficiently researched. It can be seen from the previous literature that researchers favor the methods of document analysis and case study, and so far they are mostly conducted from the level of theoretical review and status quo identification, lacking empirical studies such as development or application research on cross-border education.
[Conclusion] Based on the findings, research biases were found within the field. Finally, the paper discussed the future directions for research, including substantive concerns and methodological issues.
