This study discusses shared housing as an option for single-mother families who are not subject to any public housing support to raise their housing standards. Based on a study done in Japan, shared houses for single-mother families had operational characteristics with a drop in housing cost and mutual care through sharing of space and labor. Besides, commercial facilities that provide jobs for single mothers and nursery schools for children were in the same building as the shared housing. An analysis surveyed the intent of single mothers moving into the shared house and their desire for housing support services. The most desired living assistance was a reduction in housing and living costs, followed by childcare service after school. For single mothers with their first child closer to their late teens, information exchange and forming mutual support relationship, and single mothers with younger children picked house chores support service. The housing supports the surveyed families wanted varied depending on the lifecycle of the family. Based on the analysis, the study proposed a method to implement shared housing for single mothers. First, a measure to reduce housing costs but not to lower living standards must be introduced. Second, a measure for cooperation in house chores and care via a resident community must be introduced. An outside force does any house chores and care services would raise the living cost, which means it must be compensated through cooperation among residents. Lastly, various types of shared house model which includes various support services must be developed to raise the move-in rate of shared housing and realize single-mother families welfare.
