본 논문에서는 한국형 리더의 전형인 이순신 장군의 리더십을 조직학습이론의 관점에서 재해석함으로써 전략적 함의를 발견하고자 한다. 범접할 수 없는 구국의 영웅이 아닌 인간 이순신 장군의 삶을 재조명하고, 전승이라는 탁월한 업적을 성과 해석과 되먹임(feedback) 측면에서 분석함으로써 겸양이라는 동양적 가치의 조직학습적 의미를 발견하고자 한다. 이어서 현장의 목소리에 주목하고, 다양한 원천의 정보를 수집하는 분석적 리더십의 강점과 더불어 다양한 집단을 연결하면서도 결속력 있는 조직을 만들었던 이순신 장군의 혁신적인 학습 연결망(learning networks)에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 마지막으로 한국형 리더십을 재해석하는 작업이 동서양의 지혜를 연결함으로써 기업 활동에 전략적인 함의를 제공하는 것은 물론 향후 동서양 학계의 소통 증진에도 일조할 수 있으리란 전망을 밝히며 본 논문을 맺고자 한다.

This paper aims to provide strategic implications of Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s leadership, which serves as an archetype of Korean leadership, by reinterpreting it from an organizational learning perspective. Focusing on the humane rather than the heroic aspect of Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s biography, we aim to rediscover the Asian value of modesty in organizational learning by analyzing mechanisms of performance feedback behind the outstanding achievements of sweeping victory. We then discuss the power of Yi Sun-sin’s analytical leadership, paying attention to the voices on-site and collecting information from various sources, along with the innovativeness of his cohesive learning networks cross-cutting diverse social groups. Finally, we conclude this paper with the prospect that reinterpreting Korean leadership will not only provide business insights by bridging wisdom from the East and the West but also contribute to promoting active intellectual communication between the two worlds.
