The aim of this study is to analyze the difference in eye movement characteristics between young children with ASD and those with typical development (TD) on reading emotion-themed picture books. This study was carried out in order to provide objective empirical evidence of the positive influence of emotion-themed picture books in terms of developing emotional understanding of young children with ASD. 19 young children, aged between 5 to 6, with ASD and 19 of those with TD in Hangzhou (China) were participated. An eye tracker was adopted for figuring out the characteristics of eye movement of the participants while the young children were reading the selected picture books. Eye-tracker is an objective measurement, which indicates real-time monitoring of the direction of gaze during the experiment. The results were as follows: (1) The main character areas and the emotional incentive areas were more focused by young children with TD whereas those with ASD paid more attention to the background areas and showed less interesting in character areas. (2) Young children with TD paid more attention to the character area of fear expression while the participants with ASD showed a positive perceptual preference that paid more attention to the character area of happy expression. According to the results of this study, it has been suggested that young children with ASD could be guided to focus on the character areas and the emotional incentive areas and sufficient time should be provided when reading the negative emotion-themed picture books.
