This review studies Kim Soo Chul¡¯s life and the series of works that combine traditional and Western music. When he was at the top of his career, he turned to traditional music(gukak) to search for roots.
He attempted to integrate traditional music with Western music in various ways. This review examines his works on four groupings and finds that even though this integration was not successful in terms of popularity it represents an important musical experiment and a unique mindset.
This review identifies four groupings in his traditional music or gukak;
gukak gayo, soundtracks, creative and Ceremonial music as well as Guitar Sanjo. His discovery of its roots helped modernize gukak. He knew that popularizing gukak would be difficult, but his love motivated him. It is suggested that the public will one day come to understand and appreciate his devotion.
