바이오경제는 바이오 기술혁신과 자원이용의 지속가능성을 두 축으로 하여 현재 세계가 직면하고 있는 자연자원의 고갈과 기후변화 등의 문제를 극복하고 인간 삶의 질을 획기적으로 개선하는데 기여할 수 있는 경제적 영역이다. UN이 2030년을 목표로 추진하고 있는 지속가능개발목표(SDGs)는 전세계 모든 국가가 환경, 사회, 경제 등의 측면에서 지속가능한 발전을 이룩하여 인류의 행복과 번영, 평화를 추구하는 실천적 노력이다. 바이오경제의 발전은 SDGs의 달성에 크게 기여할 수 있다. 바이오경제는 SDGs의 17개 목표 가운데 10개의 목표와 높은 관련성을 가진다. SDGs는 세계 모든 나라에 적용되는 개발목표이지만, 개도국의 발전에 특히 주목하고 있다. 1차 생산 비중이 높은 개도국은 바이오경제에 대한 잠재력이 높지만, 낮은 기술력과 식량자원의 부족 등으로 현실의 바이 오경제는 상당히 부진한 형편이다. 개도국에서 바이오경제의 발전을 도모하고 SDGs의 달성을 위해 개도국과의 개발협력에 있어 바이오경제 분야를 적극적으로 추진할 필요가 있다.

The bioeconomy provides a solution to the problems of depletion of natural resources and climate change based on innovation of biotechnology and sustainabiliy of resource utilization. The SDGs with the target year 2030 set by the UN are aiming to sustainable development in environment, society, and economy in all nations to improve human well-being, prosperity, and peace in the world. The bioeconomy will greatly contribute the achievement of the SDGs, especially 10 SDGs out of the 17 SDGs which are closely related to bioeconomy. The SDGs are applied to all nations, but more emphasis is put on developing countries. The developing countries, where the portion of primary production is high, have a great potential of bioeconomy, but in reality the bioeconomy in these countries is severly underdeveloped because of low technology and insufficient food supply. There is a strong need for development cooperation between developed and developing countries in bioeconomy area to develop the potential of bioeconomy and to meet the targets of the SDGs.
