본 연구는 우리 근대미술교육을 성찰하고, 우리에게 다가왔던 근 현대미술교육의 실체를 살피면서, 당시의 문제의식을 되짚어 보고 나아가 현대 미술교육에 미친 영향과 내일의 미술교육의 방향을 가늠해보고자 한다. 현재 한국 미술교육은 약 백여년 전에 일제를 통하여 비주체적이고 강압적인 상황 속에서 정신과 사상을 배제한채 서구 미술교육의 외형적인 형식과 내용을 수용하였다. 당시 미술교육은 전통과 단절된 실용적, 기능주의 성격을 가진다. 그리고 우리 전통문화에 잠재된 심미적 미의식이나 학습자의 심성을 함양하는 인간교육과는 거리가 멀어져 있으며, 개인의 자의식과 비판적 사고가 배제된 수동적인 교육이었다. 또한 당시 미술교육은 비판 정신과 성찰 부재의 일본화 된 서구의 형식적인 미술교육으로 미술가나 중등교사의 양성기관 부재 속에 당연히 연구의 자생력도 없었다. 근대 백 년 동안 서구로 눈을 돌리는 상습적 오리엔탈리즘이 이때에 생성되었다. 현재에도 계속되고 있는 서구 지향의 대외의존의 문화․예술․교육으로부터 벗어나기 위한 주체적인 시각과 비판적인 정신으로 어제와 오늘의 미술과 그 교육의 성찰이 이루어져야 한다. 그런 의미에서 우리는 근대를 바로 본다면 오늘 우리 미술교육의 실체를 보다 명료하게 볼 것이며, 이는 향후 어떤 방향으로 나아가야 할지 가늠할 수가 있는 것이다. 이는 현재 미술교육의 뿌리를 확인하면서 향후 우리 미술교육이 어떤 변화를 해야 하는지에 대한 방향을 모색하기 위한 성찰로서 이를 기반으로 새로운 행보가 있길 기대하는 것이다.

The present art education in Korea has been formed as a result of the acceptance of Western art about 100 years ago along with the introduction of modern education system. Naturally the Western art and Western art education has become the major trend in Korean art and Korean art education. Even now Korean art and Korean art education are busy with importing the postmodern art and art education in the Western world. Based on this understanding, we might be able to set a clearer vision for the future direction of Korean art education. The present art education in Korea has been formed as a result of the acceptance of Western art about 100 years ago along with the introduction of modern education system. Naturally the Western art and Western art education has become the major trend in Korean art and Korean art education. Our cultural stratum is composed of three layers: premodern, modern, and postmodern
layers. Present Korean art education is an extension of premodern art education, facing the surge of postmodern art education. The premodern Korean art, based on traditional culture which was not transmitted to the modern Korean art, is enclosed in a layer cut off from the Korean liberal arts. Modern Korean art has rooted itself in an external
forms and contents without any cultural philosophy and thoughts in a non-subjective and enforced situation. And the postmodern cultural layer is an extension of various modern cultural trends. For this task, much more discussion and reflection on the philosophical history of Korean art education is necessary.
