The present art education in Korea has been formed as a result of the acceptance of Western art about 100 years ago along with the introduction of modern education system. Naturally the Western art and Western art education has become the major trend in Korean art and Korean art education. Even now Korean art and Korean art education are busy with importing the postmodern art and art education in the Western world. Based on this understanding, we might be able to set a clearer vision for the future direction of Korean art education. The present art education in Korea has been formed as a result of the acceptance of Western art about 100 years ago along with the introduction of modern education system. Naturally the Western art and Western art education has become the major trend in Korean art and Korean art education. Our cultural stratum is composed of three layers: premodern, modern, and postmodern
layers. Present Korean art education is an extension of premodern art education, facing the surge of postmodern art education. The premodern Korean art, based on traditional culture which was not transmitted to the modern Korean art, is enclosed in a layer cut off from the Korean liberal arts. Modern Korean art has rooted itself in an external
forms and contents without any cultural philosophy and thoughts in a non-subjective and enforced situation. And the postmodern cultural layer is an extension of various modern cultural trends. For this task, much more discussion and reflection on the philosophical history of Korean art education is necessary.
