본 논문은 산업 내 경쟁정도와 주가급락에 관한 연구로 경쟁정도가 증가함에 따라 주가급락이 감소하는지를 검증하였다. 산업 내 경쟁정도의 대용치로 허핀달-허쉬만지수(HHI)를 사용하였고, 주가급락은 Hutton et al.(2009), Kim et al.(2011), Chen et al.(2001)의 연구를 따라 측정하였다. 연구대상은 2006~2015년 사이에 유가증권시장에 상장된 기업들을 대상으로 분석하였다. 검증결과 산업 내 경쟁정도가 증가 할수록 주가급락은 감소하는 것으로 나타났으며, 경쟁정도와 주가급락의 음(－)의 관계는 내부지배 구조인 최대주주지분율이 증가할수록 감소함을 보여주었다. 이는 경쟁정도가 증가할수록 기업의 정보비대칭이 감소하고 양질의 회계정보를 제공하여 주가급락현상이 감소하는 것으로 해석할 수 있으며, 이러한 관계는 내부지배구조 측면에서 정보비대칭을 감소시킬 유인이 작은 경우에는 약해지는 것으로 설명할 수 있다. 이상의 결과는 경쟁정도가 증가할수록 정보비대칭이 감소하고 양질의 정보를 제공하는 유인이 큰 현상을 시장의 관찰 가능한 주가급락으로 명시적으로 실증하였다는데 의의가 있으며, 투자자들 이 경쟁정도가 낮은 기업에 투자 시 주가급락위험을 고려하여 신중히 투자하도록 주의를 환기시켜 준다. 또한 규제 기관에게는 산업 내 경쟁정도가 낮은 기업들이 정보비대칭으로 인하여 주가가 급락하지 않도록 정책수립의 방향을 제시한다.

This paper examines the relation between competition in the industry and the stock price crash risk. The Hurfindal-Hirschmann index (HHI) was used as a proxy for the degree of competition in the industry and the stock price crash was measured according to the study of Hutton et al. (2009), Kim et al. (2011) and Chen et al. (2001). The study analyzed the companies listed on the securities market between 2006 and 2015. As a result of the test, as the degree of competition in the industry increase, the crash of stock prices decreases and the negative relationship between the degree of competition and the stock price decrease with the increase of the largest shareholder ownership, which is the internal governance structure. This suggests that as the degree of competition increases, the stock price crash decreases because as the competition increases, information asymmetry decreases and the quality of accounting information increases. Also This relationship is weak when the incentive to reduce information asymmetry in the aspect of internal governance is small. The results explicitly demonstrate the information asymmetry and information quality as the degree of competition using the stock price crash in the market. By these results, Investors are cautioned that they need to consider the crash risk when investing in companies with low competition. In addition, for regulatory agencies, the results suggest that they need to make regulations to prevent with low levels of competition in the industry from having stock price crash due to information asymmetry.
