This paper aims to discuss a case study on ¡°Mente Comics¡±, which is an Internet cartoon creating community where Sixth-Grade boys of an elementary school voluntarily run in order to publish and discuss the cartoons that they created. While there has been some research that upper elementary school boys generally tend to have
lower achievements and attitudes in reading and writing compared with girls of the same age, the boys in this case study seemed to be voluntarily reading and creatively writing by enjoying diverse forms of media: including cartoons, television and cinema as well as books and newspapers. The analysis of the boys¡¯ cartoons in the community showed that their implicit knowledge of cartoon expressions and their experiences of popular culture were positively functioning as their literacy resources for creative cartoons. The Internet community seemed to provide the ¡®writers¡¯ and ¡®readers¡¯ of the cartoons with warm supports which were functioning as the basis for reinforcement of their enjoyment of and inner motivation for creating cartoons as their literacy practices. This study also indicates that teachers¡¯ interest in and support for students¡¯ writings as professional readers rather than assessors could positively contribute to stimulating students¡¯ voluntary literacy practices.
