The purpose of the present study was to investigate semantic and grammatical ability of children from multicultural families by comparing characteristics of errors in expressive vocabulary of children from nulticultural families and ordinary families in relation to their receptive vocabulary level.
Forty eight children participated in the present study: (1) 12 children from multicultural family with high receptive vocabulary level, (2) 12 children from multicultural family with low receptive vocabulary level, (3) 12 children from ordinary family with high receptive vocabulary level, and (4) 12 children from ordinary family with low receptive vocabulary level. Picture naming task and spontaneous speech task used. Rate and type of errors in naming task and spontaneous speech task were analysed. ANCOVA was utilized to measure main effect of between-receptive vocabulary level and culture. And two-way ANOVA was utilized to measure main effect of between-group, within-group and interaction effect.
The principal findings of the present study were as follows: (1) in correct answer number of expressive vocabulary, there was significant main effect of between-culture; (2) error-category analysis in expressive vocabulary showed significant main effect of within-group. That is related errors were significantly higher unrelated errors. But there were not main effect of between-group and interaction effect; (3) error-subtypes analysis in expressive vocabulary showed that children from multicultural family produced association error most frequently, and children from ordinary family produced circumlocution error most frequently; (4) in error rate of grammar, there were not significant main effect of betweenreceptive vocabulary level; (5) error-category analysis in grammar showed significant main effect of within-group. That is grammatical morphemes errors were produced most frequently, and grammar-cohesion component errors followed, and syntactic structure errors were produced least frequently. But there were not main effect of between-group and interaction effect; and (6) error-subtypes analysis in grammar, children of all group produced postposition error most frequently.
The result suggest: (1) there is a difference between culture in correct answer number of expressive vocabulary; (2) there is a difference between receptive vocabulary level in error rate of grammar; and (3) there is a difference among appearance ratio of each error-category in semantic and syntactic error.
