노자가 ‘마음수양’이라는 낱말을 사용한 적은 없다. 그렇다고 노자사상에 ‘마음수양’이라는 덕목이 없다고 말할 수는 없다. 그 사상의 핵심인 无为而无不为가 바로 노자사상에서 ‘마음수양’이기 때문이다. 성인의 마음수양은 ‘소박한 무无’에 의한 무위无为를 잘 지키는 것이고, 백성들의 마음수양은 ‘소박한 유有’에 의한 무불위无不为를 잘 지키는 것이다. 그것을 말하고 있는 『노자』의 수만은 글귀에서 대표적인 글귀가 『노자』2자의 두 번째 구절과 3장이다. 여기에 57장에서는 “내가 无为하면 백성들이 自化하고, 내가 好静하면 백성들이 自正하고, 내가 无事하면 백성들이 自富하고, 내가 无欲하면 백성들이 自樸한다”는 내용을 덧붙여서, 필자는 “성인은 小国寡民에게 ‘좁고 낮은 공공재’라는 소박한 무无로 无为之事와 不言之教라는 모범(无为)을 보이고, 그 무위자연 속에서 백성은 ‘좁고 낮은 개별재’라는 소박한 유有를 생산하고 소비하며 自化ㆍ自正ㆍ自富ㆍ自朴으로 만족(无不为)하고 살아가도록 한다”고 정리하였다. 그러므로 노자사상에서 ‘마음수양은 무신론无神论에 의한 ‘마음수양’이요, 그래서 종교적 수양이 아니며 기복적인 기원이나 은총이 전혀 없다.
그러나 이러한 노자사상에는 공자의 ‘상류 서열주의 및 인간 우월주의’를 반대하는 ‘만민 평등주의 및 만물 평등주의’라는 노자 나름의 색깔인 가치개입이 끼어들어 있다. 노자사상을 좋게 말하면 조촐하고 소박한 小国寡民이라는 자연마을을 추구하는 사상이라고 할 수 있지만, 나쁘게 말하면 가난하고 초라하여 약소한 미개국이 되는 사상이라고 할 수 있다. 그게 자연마을이든 약소미개국이든, 노자사상은 오늘날 21세기에 무슨 의미가 있을까? 공자의 말씀은 서열주의로서 오늘날 엘리트주의의 ‘노블레스 오블리제’를 실현하는 마음수양에 매우 중요한 교훈을 담고 있음에 반하여, 노자의 말씀은 평등주의로서 오늘날 민주주의 ‘다양한 개성의 자아존중’을 실현하는 마음수양에 매우 중요한 교훈을 담고 있으며, 한 걸음 더 나아가서 ‘생태적인 민주주의’를 추구하는 사람들의 ‘마음수양’에 금과옥조 같은 말씀이 담겨 있다.

Laotzu has not been used a word calling ‘Cultivation of the Mind.’ Nevertheless we don’t say that there is not a virtue calling ‘Cultivation of thd Mind.’ For ‘NoAction(无为) and NotNoAction(无不为)’ of key word in his thought is ‘Cultivation of the Mind’ in Laotzu’s thought. Laoz insist that Saint’s Cultivation of the Mind is “the Saint give people Noaction(无为) and NoLanguage(不言) as rustic NoBeing(无) called ‘narrow ad low Publicity’ at small country living a minority race(小国寡民) a s the Tao of Saint(圣人之道)” and Government’s Cultivation of the Mind is “People are living at self-naturation(自化)ㆍself-frankness(自正)ㆍself-satisfaction(自富)ㆍself-simplelife(自朴) as ‘rustic Yu有’ called ‘narrow and low Privatisity’ by chapter 3 and chapter 80 representing the Tao of Government(治世之道).” Moreover ‘Cultivation of the Mind’ at Laotzu’s thought is ‘Cultivation of the Mind’ by Atheism, so It is not religious Cultivation of the Mind and doesn’s pray for God’s grace.
Cngtzu’s thought and Laotzu’s thought takes a completely opposite stand to the meanings at a Social thought from the judgement of virtue-vice. Congtzu’s hierarchy society concept means power politics keeping hierarchy society by the proprieties and etiquettes in ritual formalities of ancestors and the Heaven(正名). Congtzu’s human-centrism concept means human society keeping his own superiority to other natural creatures. Laotzu’s eqalitarian society concept means that common people have right of equality each other neglecting hierarchy society by the proprieties and etiquettes in ritual formalities of ancestors and the Heaven(无为自然). Laotzu’s nature-centrism concept means that human and nature creatures have right of equality each other associating on an equal footing, coming and going everything in nature. So 『Laotzu』 includes ‘Golden rules’ for Cultivation of the Mind to target ‘Ecological Democracy.’
