세계화 내지 세계사회는 다양성을 적극적으로 수용하여 문화적 차이의 유지와 전체사회의 통합이라는 두 가지 목적을 함께 지향할 것을 요구하고 있다. 일반적으로 모든 에스닉 집단이 그들이 가진 문화적 차이에도 불구하고 전체사회에 평등하게 참가하여 통합을 지향하는 것을 다중문화주의라 한다. 그러나 이것은 단순히 제한된 공간에서의 종적 다양성에만 연관된 것은 아닐 것이다. 급속한 세계화의 진전, 인터넷의 확장, 외국인 이주노동자의 급증, 고속통신망을 중심으로 하는 네티즌의 성장은 다중문화적 상황을 현실적 실재인 것으로 인정하는 것이 전제로 되어 있다. 따라서 국가정책뿐만 아니라 사회적 인식도 다중문화적 상황에서의 문화적 차이를 공식적 또는 비공식적으로 인정함으로써 국민 개개인의 아이덴티티의 안정감이 타자에 대한 차별이나 편견을 타파하여 사회적 통합을 가져올 수 있도록 하여야 한다. 그럼에도 현재까지는 한국사회가 문화적 다양성을 전체사회의 통합에 장애가 되는 것으로 무시해온 것이 사실이다. 그러나 지금의 시점에서는 다중문화적 상황의 인정 또는 조장이 긍정적인 면과 부정적인 면을 모두 갖는 양면성을 가진다. 긍정적인 면은 다양성의 수용이라는 가치전환을 통해 국가의 상징적질서를 재구축하고 소수문화집단의 사회적 지위를 상승시킴으로써 국가나 전체사회는 그 이념과 정책을 보다 보편주의적인 내용으로 발전시킬 수 있다. 부정적인 면은 지나친 다양성의 허용이 사회적 정체성에 혼란을 초래하여 소수문화를 이질적 반문화로 취급하려는 주류문화의 반발 그리고 편견과 차별을 확대시킬 수도 있다. 장단점이 여하하든 다중문화적 상황에 적응할 수 있는 새로운 사회적 정체성의 확립이 필요하다.

Multiculturalism does not simply mean that divergent cultural species are in a limited area, but that all ethnic groups with their cultural differences can participate in and orient to the social integration of a country. The multicultural situation has been realized in Korea by globalization, foreign immigrant labor, and rapid growth of internet and netizen cyber communities. With the situation becoming generalized, actualized reality and social identities of Korean young generation are changing, but social recognition of people and policies of government disregard this transition of culture and identity. It is because multicultural society and diversifying subcultures might disturb integration of nation-state of Korea and the nation’s social identity. But now the multicultural situation is a real one we are faced to everyday and then we need our new social identities.
