This study sets out to compare the results of a single versus a multiple-item measure employed to investigate the job satisfaction of employees. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the superiority or otherwise of the measures in ascertaining the overall job satisfaction of workers.
Results indicated that the single-item measure was significantly correlated with the multiple-item measures of job satisfaction (r=.61). It shows that the single-item measure of job satisfaction compared favorably to the multiple-item measures and in some cases accounted for incremental variance in overall employee satisfaction.
The conclusion, therefore, is that the single-item measure appears to be preferable to multiple-item measures of job satisfaction in that it is more efficient, is more cost-effective, and is better to measure changes in job satisfaction.
