한국어 교육은 그동안 큰 발전을 해 왔다. 한국어 교육의 성장이 있을 수 있었던 것은 여러 외부 요인들과 함께 한국어 교육자들의 헌신적인 노력, 한국어 교육 단체의 활발한 활동, 정부 당국의 한국어 교육 정책 추진과 재정적 지원 덕분이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 요인들로 인해 교과과정이나 교수법의 개선, 능력 평가의 제도화, 교사 자격 제도의 도입 등 교육의 양과 질을 높이기 위한 다양한 노력과 활동이 성과를 거두어 온 것이다. 그러나 성과도 있었던 반면에 수정, 보완하면서 개선해 나아가야 할 점들도 있다.
첫째, 올바른 방향 설정을 위해서는 외국어로서의 한국어 교육과정 구성을 위한 기초 연구가 필요하다.
둘째, 한국어 연구 개발 체제의 효율성을 위해서 한국어 연구와 보급 기관을 범정부 차원에서 개선해야 한다.
셋째, 한국어 학습 교재, 특히 범용 교재와 관련하여 기본 어휘를 바탕으로 하여 한국어 학습 사전이나 범용성 교재를 개발해야 한다.
넷째, 한국어 교육을 담당하는 교원의 자질 향상을 위해 연수를 강화하고 한국어 교원에 대한 재정적 지원이 뒷받침되어야 한다.
다섯째, 한국어 능력 시험이 토플(TOEFL)이나 토익(TOEIC)처럼 공신력이 있는 시험이 되도록 한국어 능력 시험의 결과에 따라 응시자에게 보장되는 대책이 있어야 한다.
한국어 국외 보급 사업은 정부의 노력만으로는 성공하기 어렵다. 앞으로 외국어로서의 한국어 교육 사업은 정부와 학술 단체, 기업, 개개인까지 모두가 노력하고 지원하는 체계가 마련되어야 할 것이다.

Korean Language Education as a foreign language have developed rapidly last few years because of support in policy from the administration, dedicated effort of Korean Language educators. However, in spite of the efforts like that, there are still complements in this field.
First of all, we need the basic research about the curriculum for Korean Language as a foreign language.
Second, we have to reform the educational and policy institutions across the government.
Third, It is necessary to develop the curriculum materials for general learners and the dictionary from the basis vocabulary.
Forth, we need to strengthen the training program and the financial support for the educators.
The rest, we have to make up the plans for efficient use of TOPIK like TOEFL and TOEIC.
It is not easy for us to get a great success only with government aid in the supply policy of Korean Language. We have to set up the support system that is composed with the administration, enterprises, and the academic societies.
