1940년대 후반 대전지역 문화 연구는 대전 충남지역의 근대문학의 단초를 마련한다는 점에서 중요하게 다가온다. 그동안 이 시기 대전지역 문학에 대한 연구로는 박명용의 『대전문학사』에 수록된 『향토(鄕土)』와 시전문지 『동백(冬栢)』 등에 대한 내용이 거의 진부였다. 지금까지 진보문학계열의 자료가 발견되지 않아 생긴 불가피한 현상이었다. 이 계열의 잡지인 『현대』가 발견되었고, 해방 이후부터 한국전쟁이 일어나기 전까지 이 지역에서 발간된 『동방신문』이 발견된 이상 해방기 대전지역 문학에 대해 새롭게 조영할 필요성이 제기된다.
1940년대 후반 대전지역 문학은 다음과 같은 의미를 지닌다.
먼저, 새로 발견된 자료들을 통해 이 시기 대전의 문화, 예술 및 문학을 담은 다양한 매체의 존재를 확인할 수 있다는 점이다. 이 다양한 매체들이 대전지역의 문화, 예술, 문학장을 형성하고 있었던 것이다.
그리고 해방기 대전지역에 순수문학과 진보문학이 공존했음을 알 수 있다는 점이다. 기존의 해방기의 문학 연구를 보연 『향토』와 『동백』 위주의 순수문학 계열의 문학이 주로 논의되었으나 이제는 좌익계열의 문화지인 『현대』가 발견되었음으로 이 시기 대전지역 문학 연구가 새롭게 이루어져야 할 것이다.
또한 해방기 대전지역의 신문인 『동방신문』에 실린 문학작품을 통해 당시 순수 서정을 추구한 지역문인들의 작품세계를 좀 더 확인할 수 있었다는 점이다. 이 시기 순수문학 계열의 문학 면모를 좀 더 알 수 있는 계기를 마련하고 있는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
