1950년 6월 25일 발발한 전쟁은 남한과 북한간의 내전으로 시작 되었다가 이후 유엔군과 중국인민지원군의 참전으로 국제전으로 변화되었다. 김일성은 1949년부터 전쟁에 대한 열의를 가지고 있었으나, 결정적으로 전쟁이 시작된 배경은 국제정세의 변화와 중국의 사회주의 국가 수립으로 스탈린이 전쟁의 개전을 허락하였기 때문이었다. 북한은 소련으로부터 전쟁 물자를 지원받았고, 소련 군사고 문단의 도움으로 전쟁을 진행할 수 있었다. 그러나 인천상륙작전 이후 열세에 몰린 북한은 소련에게 지원을 요청하지만, 소련의 거절로 중국에게 직접 지원을 요청하였다. 중국은 6·25전쟁이 개전되고, 미국이 타이완에 개입하자 즉각적으로 동북변방군을 구성하여 전쟁에 대한 대비를 하였다. 하지만 중국의 6·25전쟁의 참전은 단순히 결정될 수 있는 사안이 아니었다. 결국 중국은 북한, 소련의 요청과 내부논의 등을 통해 동북변방군을 중국인민지원군이라는 이름으로 개칭하여 6·25전쟁에 참전시키는 결정을 하였다.

The Korean War which broke out on June 25, 1950 started as a civil war between north and south korea and developed into a large-scale international war involving UN countries and China. Kim Il-sung was eager to start a war since 1949, but the decisive factor in the decision to go to the war was Stalin’s approval for the invasion after changes in international situations and establishment of a socialist state in China. North Korea received war supplies from the Soviet Union and was able to continue the war based on the assistance from the Soviet Military Advisory Group. Since the Inchon Landing operation on september 15, 1950, North Korea requested military aid to the Soviet Union, but the request was rejected. Hence, it went to China for help. When the U. S.
started to expand its influence over Taiwan, China immediately organized ‘Northeast Borderland Army’ and prepared a war. However, it was not simple for China to enter into the Korean War. After all, China decided to participate in the Korean War after renaming its Northeast Borderland Army into Chinese People's Volunteer Army.
