Since 2000 when the separation of responsibilities for prescribing and for dispensing was first introduced, the venue for pharmaceutical logistics management has changed from hospital to pharmacy. In the wake of this change, most pharmacies faced with the resulting increased number of prescription items dispensed had to seek to keep a minimum inventory level instead of an optimum one. As a natural consequence, a new delivery system focusing on high-frequency and low-volume has been very much called for. Compared to advanced countries, however, the logistics outsourcing is not widely spread in Korea yet, and especially Korean has not emerged from backwardness in terms of pharmaceutical logistics. As a result of carrying out research for this thesis, it was found that there has been no large difference in the expense reduction and service achievements yet, no matter if Korean pharmaceutical manufacturing companies operate logistics management autonomously or outsourcing. The reason is that some interest groups and the government make it difficult legally and institutionally for logistics-specialized companies to perform the 3PL sales of pharmaceutical goods in addition to the lack of logistics-specialized companies. Nevertheless, considering the detailed average of each item, it is expected that outsourcing of pharmaceutical logistics will contribute to cost cutting and the improvement of customer service.
