The purpose of this study is to research Buddhism religion and training tradition of Geumgangsan that is the influential ground for determining the Buddhism of the Joseon Dynasty, which is evaluated as a mountain Buddhism, as native Buddhism. The reason that the temples of Geumgangsan could maintain certain formalities under the Buddhism suppressing policy of Joseon government is that government selected Geonbongsa, Singyesa, Yujeomsa, Pyohunsa, etc. as the places for royal prayers. Furthermore, the reason that Geumgangsan and its temples are discriminated from the temples of other area in the history of Korean Buddhism is that they were the
places containing special meaning for religion and training so that it was tradition for Buddhism leaders of the late Joseon Dynasty and the Emperor of Korea to stay at Mahayeon for a season. Recently, Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism actively supported the recovery of Singyesa and completed Buddha-work because it desired the succession of Buddhism religion and training tradition of this area, which has shared large portion in the history of Korean Buddhism.
Since the late Joseon Dynasty, the Buddhism religion of Geumgangsan has established its characteristic as the system of Sammunsuhak(ß²Ú¦áóùÊ) was maintained. Pyohunsa was the temple, which was constructed on the foundation of Dharma Vessel religion based on Hwaeom Thought and its sudden enlightenment approach. Yujeomsa was famous for chamseondoryeong(óÑàÉÔ³íÞ) based on direct shortcut approach. Singyesa was reborn as chamseondoryeong based on direct shortcut approach on the foundation of Faith in Amitābha. Traditionally, Manilyeombulhoi(Ø¿ìíæöÝÖüå) based on Faith in Amitābha was popular in Geonbongsa. It can be said that the
tradition of lecture and meditation has been founded since the 19th century. Like that, the Buddhism religion of Geumgangsan was the place where Beophwa Cheontai, Hwaeom Bohyeon, Jeongto Yeombul, Seonbeop Chamseon, Esoteric Buddhism and Odaesan religion are concentrated. Top 4 temples of Geumgangsan have maintained unique
training traditions. For Pyohunsa, Pyohun, Sinrim, and Neungin have succeeded practical Hwaeom Thought of Uisang since the Era of Unified Silla and it made traditional clue of Seonkyoilwon(àÉÎçìéêª) or Seonkyogyeomsu(àÉÎçÌÂáó), which formed the main flow of Korean Buddhism. For Yujeomsa, it seems that the tradition of Samyeong Yujeong, who was the founder of this temple, maintained the tradition of his teacher, Cheongheo Hyujeong, ¡®Enters to seonbeop(àÉÛö) through kyobup(ÎçÛö)'. For Singyesa, When considering the annotation of Tanmoon, who was the Hwaeom person of the early Goryeo age, adopted Beopanseon(ÛöäÑàÉ) and practiced thought of
Buddhism of Myocheong, it seems that the temple has emphasized the training system of Kyoseonilchi(ÎçàÉìéöÈ), focusing on doctrine and studying seonbeop(àÉÛö) additionally. For Geonbongsa, Yujeomsa, When considering that the temple has succeeded the tradition of founder Baljing Hwasang, jungchangjo(ñìóÜðÓ) Doseon and Naong Hyegeun, it is estimated that the temple maintained the training tradition where Faith in Amitābha and seonbeop(àÉÛö) are combined.
Therefore, the temples of Geumgangsan of the late Joseon Dynasty were the furnaces of Buddhism religion and training tradition. The temples of Geumgangsan were the places where Buddhism religions were concentrated and assemblies of religions so that national religions could be specialized in a certain area. The area contains the peak name, rock name, valley name and waterfall name with Taoist background as well as Gwaneum(κëå) Munsu(Ùþâ¨) believe(ãáäæ) and the faith of Amitābha Maitreya that formed popular foundation of Buddhism religion. Like that, the temples of Geumgangsan were the holy places of Buddhism and assemblies of all religions.
