Spiders use only living materials as their foods. According to some recent studies, however, it is known that some spider species, especially such as wolf spiders and jumping spiders, also could feed dead insects depending on their prey conditions. In this study, we tested whether the prey conditions have the effects on the predatory behavior of Nephila clavata. The behavior of N. clavata on the living foods was quick approach to its prey and non-hesitated injection of venom. After being completely paralyzed and motionless, the prey was wrapped with silk threads. The wrapped prey was carried to the web-hub of the spider for feeding. When the dead foods were provided, however, N. clavata showed different behavior patterns from the case of the living foods. Most of the dead foods did not arouse the predatory behavior of N. clavata. The dead foods were untouched and some of them were removed from the host"s web. When head-cut foods were provided, the host spider fed about 87% of the foods provided.
