Aircraft R & D organization plays a leading role that determines the future of an aircraft manufacturing company. Many companies support and foster R & D organizations on a long term basis because they are aware that future benefit creation depends on the result of R & D activity, despite the fact that it only requires investment without profits for the time being. It is commonly witnessed that many companies lose to their late counterparts and get expelled out of market as a result of neglecting R & D by being overly confident at its present market share. It is a very crucial task to activate R & D organizations because they are the motive power for growth of aircraft manufacturing companies.
This study aims is to seek ways to activate more effective aircraft R & D organizations that achieve the world"s best technology by overcoming cultural, organizational, and customary in the wake of the consolidation of R & D organizations of T-50/A-50(Samsung) and KT-1/KO-1(Daewoo) of KAI, a sole corporation with equivalent shares of three companies - Samsung, Hyundai, and Daewoo - founded to increase Korea"s international competitiveness in aerospacial industry. It analyzes a R & D organization and its culture, traits of R & D personnel, a management & control system of R&D activities, and advanced company cases using literature study methods.
Based on the analysis results, this study suggests the following requirements for activation of R & D organizations. First, an integrated "One-site" R & D organization culture should be firmly fixed. Second, an appropriate role assignment should be implemented on stability of workload and procurement of technology development capability by conducting both sole development and international co-development harmoniously on a long-term basis. Third, active government-level financial supports should accompany aircraft R & D.
Also, the limitations of this study and directions for further studies are presented.
