The purpose of this study was to see the effects of Self-Concept Promotion Activity on self-concept and playfulness of young children with developmental delay.
For this study, thirty eight young children with developmental delay were selected, on the basis of CA, PEP, and SQ results. The 38 subjects were divided into two groups: the experimental group for Self-Concept Promotion Activity and the control group for traditional small group activity. The test instrument for self-concept was "I feel......Me feel" made by Bentley and Yeatts(1974), and the CPS developed by Barnett(1990, 1991) for teachers, was used to evaluate the levels of playfulness of young children. The experimental procedure was composed of a pre-test, a treatment of experiment, and a post-test with Self-Concept Promotion Activity implemented during the fifteen 20-minute sessions. T-test was used to verify the effect of the Self-Concept Promotion Activity on self-concept and playfulness of young children with developmental delay between the two groups.
The results were obtained as follows;
1. A significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control group on self-concept, showing more improvements in the experimental group.
2. Significant differences were found between the two groups on 4 factors of self-concept.
3. A significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control group on playfulness, showing more improvements in the experimental group.
4. Significant differences were found between the two groups on 5 factors of playfulness.
In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that the implementation of Self-Concept Promotion Activity is the direct and systematic way to improve the self-concept and playfulness of young children with developmental delay.
