The innovative cluster approach emphasized the importance of increasing returns to scale as crucial to the formation of locally based advantages. It also draws attention to the endogenous character of these advantages which are created in a particular place. The key claim of cluster approach is that the increased emphasis on tacit knowledge makes spatial proximity more important. But much of the literature fails to adequately ground its arguments in empirical inquiry and also tend to underemphasize the importance of wider extra-local networks.
This study tried to examine the effect of spatial distribution of external linkages on the technological innovation of small and medium-sized firms. Based on a sample of 487 firms in Korean southeast region, this study considered the innovation-related collaboration and spatial distribution of firm linkages as the determining factors of technological improvement.
With regards to the spatial distribution of production and marketing linkages, innovative firms are significantly more likely to be extra-locally networked. And technological licensing is positively associated with both product and process innovation. It shows that external connections to the global economy play an important role in sustaining competitive advantage.
With regards to the spatial distribution of collaborative linkages, it shows that cooperaton between manufacturer and their suppliers increased and the large flagship firms play a critical role on channeling external know-how and information to local firms. In contrast, bilateral horizontal cooperaton within local firms are low and does not contribute to the technological performance. These results confirm the idea that firms that depend on regional knowledge bases do not receive sufficient knowledge and information inputs to outperform their competitors.
