1990년대 이후 전 지구적 이념으로 등장한 지속가능발전은 다양한 주체의 집합적 행위를 통해 좀더 잘 추구될 수 있다. 특히 지속가능한 생산과 소비는 경제와 환경보전이라는 두 가지 목적을 동시에 추구하기 위한 필연적인 선택이라 할 수 있으며, 그 핵심에 녹색구매가 자리 잡고 있다. 이 글에서는 녹색구매의 활성화를 목적으로 설립되고 비정부적 비영리조직의 성격을 지니고 있는 4개의 권역별 및 국가별 녹색구매네트워크(GPN)―EGPN, NAGPI, JGPN, KGPN―를 대상으로 그 설립배경과 일반현황, 기본원칙, 주요 활동 및 성과의 관점에서 정리하였다.

One could say that sustainable development may occur at the intersection of sustainable production and consumption. Green Purchasing is at the center of sustainable production and consumption. This paper describes four regional or national Green Purchasing Networks(GPNs)―European Green Purchasing Network(EGPN), North American Green Purchasing Initiative(NAGPI), Japanese Green Purchasing Network(JGPN), and Korean Green Purchasing Network(KGPN)―focusing on their background, principles, activities, and performance.
