The purpose of this study was to examine family functions and psychological well-being of adolescents according to their parents" marital status. 1070 subjects of male and female high school students filled out "Self-Report Family Inventory (SFI) ¥±" (Beavers & Hampson, 1990) and "Index of Well-being" (Campbell, 1976). Parents" marital statuses were categorized into "both biological parents family"(BBP) (87.9%), "biological parent-step parent family"(BPSP)(2.1%), "biological father only family"(BFO)"(4.0%), and "biological mother only family"(BMO)(5.4%). As to the family types of Beavers model, about a half of the subjects perceived their family as "midrange" (48.3%), a third as "healthy" (32.6%), 17.5% as "borderline", and 1.6% as "severely disturbed". The subjects from BBP and BMO are more likely to be classified as "healthy" and less as "disturbed", than those from BPSP and BFO. A similar result was found with the psychological wellbeing, which correlated positively with the level of family functioning. The highest psychological wellbeing was found with the subjects from "healthy" BFO. The results were discussed with regard to child rearing.
