The purpose of this study was to investigate the cognitive characteristics of special-education-needed children by using the K-ABC. The subjects were 3-8 years-old children from three groups having specific language impairment(SLI), mental retardation, and emotional disturbances. Group differences on the standard deviation(SD) and the percentage of the strength and weakness were compared. The results of the study were as follows; First, the SLI group showed more weakness on the sequential processing compared with the simultaneous processing, on the other hand the emotional disturbances group displayed more strength on the simultaneous processing. Second, compared with the percentage of the score on the subtests making up the mental processing composite, the SLI group exhibited strength on Magic Window, Gestalt Closure and Spatial Memory by higher mean and percentage, whereas showed weakness on Number Recall, Word Order, Triangle and Matrix Analogies. The mental retardation group displayed strength on Gestalt Closure, weakness on Triangle, whereas the percentage of the score on most of subtests was low. The emotional disturbances group showed strength on Magic Window, Gestalt Closure and Number Recall, weakness on Triangle, Photo Series and Face Recognition, and scored significantly high percentage of strength and weakness on almost all subtests. Third, compared with the percentage of the score on the subtests making up the achievement scale, the SLI group displayed high percentage of strength on Riddles and weakness on Faces & Places. The mental retardation group exhibited high percentage of strength on Reading/Decoding and Reading/Understanding, whereas showed high percentage of weakness on Arithmetic and Faces & Places. The emotional disturbances group showed high percentage of strength on Riddles and Reading/Decoding and weakness on Faces & Places.
