Various new types of retailing stores have emerged since 1996 when Korean retailing market opened for the global markets. These new types of retailing stores contribute to increase the consumer welfare and the efficiency of Korean retailing industry. Also they encourage consumers' activity by satisfying their shoping needs whinc change drastically these days. But on the contrary these new retailing markets discourage classical Korean retailing stores which are small and lack of shopping infrastructure.
This paper investigates the large scale discount stores and the classical small size retailing stores which gather in so called "Je Re Market". These two types of retaling stores generally represent the drastic changes in Korean retailing industry in the sense that the changes in their growth rates represent current changes of Korean retailing industry. For this task this paper includes theoretic consumer model to explain recent changes of Korean consumer behavior which is crucial for the recent changes in Korean retailing industry. Also this paper contains the survey results of consumer behaviors around Cheong Ju City.
The major results in this paper are ; 1) the large scale discount stores attract more various consumers in age, sex, and family shoping, 2) the large scale discount stores are not regarded price competitive for consumers but competitive in product variety, product credibility and services and shoping infrastructure.
