The study aims to diagnose natural science and engineering avoidance phenomenon through the analysis of scores of the national scholastic ability examination for university entrance and the data of Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). Science and engineering avoidance among students with high and middle level of academic ability has been very extensive and systemic recently. It was found that the rate of return to engineering majors was a little bit higher than those of social science, humanity, and art majors while the rate of return to natural science major was much lower than most other majors. The rates of return to both science and engineering major is much lower than that of the medical majors. While the economic status of two majors has been deteriorated, that of medical majors has been better than before, which seems to attract many high achievers of high school graduates. Compared to other majors, science and engineering majors are also expected to experience more frequent discontinuity in their job careers, income unstability and lower job security in their career paths, and dissatisfaction with their incomes and jobs. Based on the analysis, this study claims that over supply of engineering and science majors with changes in demand due to structural change from manufacturing industries to service industries can cause this deterioration of economic status of science and engineering majors, which results in the severe avoidance of those majors among prospective college students. Some of potential entrants in these majors now seem to choose medical science, teacher education programs, and social science that have better job prospects.
