This study examines the influence on consumer satisfaction on general life satisfaction and for determining the antecedents of both consumer satisfaction and life satisfaction. This study extends previous path analytic life satisfaction studies by simultaneously considering 4 sub-samples identified by sex and age categories and incorporating consumer alienation as a potential determinant of life satisfaction.
A recursive model depicting a theoretical chain between the amount of allowance, allowance adequacy, socio-economic class, consumer alienation, level of consumption satisfaction and overall satisfaction with life was examined by path analysis. The data used to test the hypothesized relationship were collected by survey from 723 adolescent consumers living in Daejon.
The results of this study are as follows:
1) On average 3-6 of the 12 directional hypothesized relationships were significant in each of the sub-sample analyses. The explained variance estimate averaged across the samples for the criterion variables of consumer alienation, satisfaction with level of consumption and life satisfaction were .07, .38 and .24 respectively.
2) Allowance adequacy, consumer alienation and satisfaction with level of consumption were plausible determinants of life satisfaction.
3) Differences were also found between the sex and age groups and suggest caution in generalizing across groups. For example, amount of allowance, the perception of allowance adequacy and the socio-economic class were not significant predictors of consumer alienation in male group.
