Pavilion was created for the use of rest, but for the literati class in the middle ages, its function was not confined to the place of rest and the appreciation of beautiful natural landscape. Natural landscape described in this gave motive to establish the identity of literati class through cultivating mentality and it was the document of esthetic consciousness which could discover the principles of world through the change of nature and the inherent law of it, going beyond the meaning of landscape itself.
The Eungje(ëëð², literary work written by royal order) pavilion in the early of Chosun was built for the purpose of kings' rest when culture and institutions were well equipped and the operation of a nation entered the stage of stability after the construction of the Chosun kingdom. The writing of it recorded the attitude of a king as a ruler and esthetic consciousness and its record was written by the subjects who worked for Daegak(ÓæÊÈ), a writing institution built in accordance with command of a king.
According to writers, the construction of pavilion in the most beautiful place means that nature affirms the great achievement of a king. In other words, the establishment of a pavilion indicated the prosperity of an era. However, the literary men of those days didn't confine its meaning in the affirmation and praise of prosperity of a certain era, but they also recommended king to cultivate his mind and rule wisely for the whole nation in order to keep prosperity from generation to generation. Therefore, most writings of Eungje Pavilion emphasized that king accepted this landscape as a basis of wise rule, through going beyond the appreciation of a nature. Whether pavilion's meaning is substantial or ideal, any relevant writer suggested that esthetic consciousness in regard to the surrounding landscape of a pavilion transcends the appreciation dimension of natural features.
For them. pavilion was the microcosmos. From their perspective, king should complete his work through accommodating himself to the harmony of universe and realizing its law in this world. In the process of ruling, king can cultivate his virtue and display love for his people. According to them, the adminstration of exemplary pavilion can be the precedent model of next generation, and prosperous atmosphere of a certain era can be maintained and preserved in harmony with rest and political affairs. The discourse related to the realization of appropriate tension and relax in the political reign which was performed in the time of kings Mun and Mu respectively in the Chou dynasty of China and morality of "Enjoying together with people," can be said to have been originated from the consciousness of a pavilion.
