In the aging society, elderly married couples are increasing in Quantity and the marital relationship has power over the Quality of life of the elderly. Therefore, these couples have to construct a new role in this changing society. Generally it is noted that the satisfaction of married women is decreasing; however the satisfaction of married men continues. There are also many more couples remaining married but at the same time there are many who are on the verge of divorce. In this context, the present study interviewed men planning to retire from the government wjthin two or three years, women, and children whose spouses and fathers, respectively, have been working for the government, and identified major factors causing breakages among family members. In the Korean literature on family, the patriarchal nature of Korean society has been pointed out as a culprit for preventing a harmonious relationship among family members. In this vein, the present study is in accordance with other existing ones, and at the same time it reveals how the patriarchy represented by men unfolds within the family and seeks ways to solve it. The stories of the research participants were theorized into six categories and suggestions were provided for each theorized problem.
