본 연구는 아동의 스트레스와 정신건강의 수준을 확인하고 이들간에 상관관계가 어떠한지 살펴보기 위하여 이루어졌다. 이를 위해 서울과 지방에서 초등학교 4, 5, 6학년 아동988명(남507, 여481)을 대상으로 생활사건 스트레스척도와 간이정신진단 검사를 실시하였다. 연구결과를 분석한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 아동의 스트레스는 전체적으로 학원공부, 교사관계, 공부문제로 인한 스트레스가 가장 높게 나타났다. 이는 학년, 지역, 남녀간을 막론하고 일관되게 나타났다. 아동의 스트레스 수준을 배경 변인 별로 차이검증을 한 결과 서울 아동이 지방 아동보다, 4학년이 5, 6학년보다 유의한 수준에서 더 높은 스트레스를 나타내었으나 남녀 사이에는 전체적으로 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않고 주변인물과의 다툼이나 꾸중과 부모관계에서만 유의한 차이를 나타내었다.
둘째, 아동의 정신건강 수준은 전체적으로 강박증, 신체화, 불안, 우울증 등에서 건강상태가 가장 나쁜 것으로 나타났다. 이를 배경 변인 별로 살펴보면 서울 아동이 지방 아동보다, 4학년이 5, 6학년보다 유의한 수준에서 정신건강 상태가 나쁜 것으로 나타났으나, 남녀 사이에는 전체적으로 유의한 차이를 나타내지 않았고 불안과 편집증에서만 유의한 차이를 나타내었다.
특히 정신건강이 심각한 경우를 살펴본 결과 요인들 사이에는 그 출현율에 차이가 적으나 4학년 아동이 예민성(12.5%), 신체화(11.7%), 공포불안(11.4%), 우울증(11.0%) 등이, 서울 아동의 경우 신체화(12.8%), 강박증(11.3%), 공포불안(9.9%) 등이 높은 출현율을 보이고 있다.
셋째, 스트레스와 정신건강 사이의 상관관계를 분석한 결과 전체요인 모두에서 높은 상관을 나타내었다. 이는 스트레스가 정신건강과 관련된다는 일반적인 가정을 확인해 주는 결과로서 아동의 스트레스를 요인을 줄임으로써 아동의 정신건강을 증진할 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

This study is intend to investigate the level of children's stress and mental hygiene and the relationship between stress and mental hygiene of children. A total of 988 primary school children(m: 507, f: 481), 4th, 5th and 6th grader, have been participated in the present study. The subjects completed life event scale and SCL.
Conclusions as follow;
First, the stress level of children on private institute activity, problems with teacher and academic related difficulties was higher than other stress factors. The difference of stress level between seoul and distric children, 4th and 5,6th grader was significant, but not between male and female children.
Second, the children's level of mental hygiene in obsessive-compulsive, somatization, anxiety and depression was bad than others. The difference of mental hygiene level between seoul and distric children, 4th and 5,6th grader was significant, but not between male and female children.
Third, there was significant correlation between stress and mental hygiene of children in all factors. We must try to promote children's mental hygiene by reducing stressor.
