The purpose of this study is to look into what(to what extent) the under limit of Korean Chinese literature is. The author already investigated the process of Chinese poetry being replacing into modern one through a thesis entitled ¡°A modifying aspect of Korean Chinese literature¡±, this time would look into the process of Chinese characters(prose) being alternated with a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters and a style of writing pure Korean characters. The material selected as the object of study was newspaper published at that time, and the reformists-intellectuals, who had chosen only a pure Chinese characters in ¡ºHan-sung-sun-bo¡»(newspaper), proposed the necessity of a change for the first time by selecting a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters and a style of writing pure Korean characters with Chinese characters in ¡ºHan-sung-ju-bo¡» at the same time. However, when considering that ¡ºHan-sung-ju-bo¡» was the newspaper aimed at government officials who were accustomed to using Chinese characters, it¡¯s found that the choice of the mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters or the style of writing pure Korean characters has an aspect of no considering readers¡¯ convenience, showing an ideological aspect.
In the process of Chinese characters being replaced into the mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters, a problem is the one of the very literary property. In Chinese characters, prose writings, unlike poems, have little formal elements worth supporting literary property. The reason that Chinese poetry has a litter stronger hold on life than that of Chinese characters is because there was no Korean literary poetry worth alternating with literary property of Chinese poetry. Therefore, Chinese poetry had became made lively in creative writing and its distribution through the columns of all kinds of mass media till the middle 1920's when free-styled poems appeared, while Chinese character was vague in the boundary line between literature and non-literature. It means that the domain of literature was broad to that extent, and as you can see from the cases of ¡ºMaeg-ja¡»- the Works of Mencius, ¡ºJang-ja¡»- the Works of Chuangtzu, ¡ºSa-gi¡», ¡ºSam-kuk-sa-gi¡», the writings about thought or history also, if they are successful in literary writing, were considered as excellent works of literature. However, a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters or a style of writing pure Korean characters did not succeed to this function of Chinese character. As a result, in a genre like novel in which a literal form is fixed, a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters or a style of writing pure Korean characters also could be an expressive media for a literary work, but in a literary style such as an editorial sentence or an article, it was degraded to a practical sentence out of the domain of literature. After all, a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters or a style of writing pure Korean characters remained at only succeeding to its domain as a practical sentence among earlier broad domains of expression with Chinese characters. That is, it succeeded to the practical function of Chinese character effectively, but failed in succeeding to the literary function of Chinese character. A trace of efforts to succeed to the literary function of Chinese characters with a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters can be confirmed through the editorial column of ¡ºSi-sa-chong-bo¡».
Even though various attempts were made to make use of a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters of the editorial column in ¡ºSi-sa-chong-bo¡», which is believed to be written by Jang Ji-Yeon, as a literary style. Finally, with the failure of these efforts, broad literary expressive domains of Chinese characters disappeared and a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters or a style of writing pure Korean characters peformed a
