This essay purports to examine how the literature of late Joseon in classical Chinese language adopted and expressed the colloquial Korean native language in their writing. The author especially uses for its object of study various styles of literary works either written both in classical Chinese and native colloquial languages or translated from either to the other. The tendency of expressing the peculiar styles of Korean vernacular expressions in literary works written in classical Chinese language of late Joseon shows the literati's independent spirit in composition and their efforts to accept the heart of Korea people.
It is especially meaningful to attempt to examine such a tendency in late Josoen. This is because the issue of accepting Korean vernacular language in the writing in classical Chinese language existed from the very beginning that Korean people started using classical Chinese for their writing instrument but reducing the distance between the native language of Korea and its writing has never been easy. What is discussed and claimed in this essay, however, will merely have limited meaning, unless readers understand the difference in nature between the colloquial Korean and the written classical Chinese. Otherwise, the concentrated efforts made by the literati discussed here would not be regarded as more than non-Korean Chinese literature.
