Higher Education of Korea has rapidly developed in a short time, and the ratio of students who go on to higher education is about 75%. But per capita expenditures of higher education reach less than 50% of the total average of OECD countries. It has been known that the expenditures for higher education absolutely depends on private resource. Yet per capita private expenditures of college/university students has not been scientifically investigated.
The purposes of this article are as following: 1) to survey the perception of college/university students about their private educational expenditures, 2) to estimate the size of their private expenditures, 3) to analyze the differences of expenditures by personal backgrounds and socio-economic status and school location. In this paper, the private expenditures include both direct expenditure(expenses for teaching materials, transportation expenses, group activity fees, etc) and indirect expenditure(expenses for out campus program, cultural expense, etc)
Main results of the analysis are as follows; 1) the college students are not satisfied with their spendings for the appropriate educational service. 2) the college students spend 380 thousand won in average a month. 3) by categories of private expenditures, male students spend more for group activity fees than the female, while the female students more for the learning materials than the male. The students who have part time jobs spend less than the others, and those whose family income are over 4 million won a month spend more, especially for the out-campus program, transportation, and culture activity than the others.
