The aim of this study is to provide data that might help nursing management through the analysis of activities of daily living(ADL) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
The subjects of the study consist of one hundred ninety-three outpatients with rheumatoid arthritis at three university hospitals in Taegu between July 10 and August 30, 1999. The instruments used in this study were the ADL scale developed by Katz et al.(1970) and Barthel(1973) and revised by lee Eun Ok(1988) it Analysis of data was done by using the descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan with SPSS program.
The major findings can be summarized as follows
1. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis's activities of daily living scores shows the average 71.96 out of the perfect scores 80 Among the 3 subscales, putting on clothes(3.83), eating meals(3.82) and personal hygiene(3.77) are done by them pretty well Walking scopes(3.260 which includes walking on the plain, walking up and down the stairs, the rest of other activities scopes(3.43) which include getting in and out of car, doing the housework, doing the garden are difficult for them to carry out.
2. The scores of ADL on demographic variables showed significant difference on age(F=3.194, p=014), sex(t=4.947, p=000), marital statue(F=4.879, p=009), religion(F=3.497, p=001), monthly income( F=4.105, p=008), however, no significant difference on the unemployment which is caused by disease and disease period.
According to this findings, it showed that walking scopes of ADL is difficult for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore nurses are to provide nursing intervention which are considered their problems. The management program is required in order to prevent diseases in progress in advance and which helps patients with rheumatoid arthritis carry out their activities of daily living independently.
