The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for the housing space planning desirable for adolescents through survey on their level of housing satisfaction, 466 middle sod high school students living in Chongju city. Gwesan-gun and Eumsung-gun were selected and questionnaire was conducted during August 25, 1999 to August 28, 1999.
The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple comparisons method, The results were as follows.
1) In general, adolescents showed average level of physical housing satisfaction. They showed less satisfaction on current conditions of soundproof related to privacy and space for hobby and leisure time. There were 4 factors deciding the satisfaction level. The size was the most important factor and other factors like safety/equipment, beauty/convenience and relation with outer space followed. Younger age, higher household income, larger house, more washing rooms, and ownership of house gave adolescents higher satisfaction and they who have large house and their own room were highly satisfied with beauty/convenience factor.
2) The socio-psychological housing satisfaction level of adolescents was in the middle of the range. Similar as in the physical housing satisfaction, high socio-psychological housing satisfaction was related with less family, higher household income, more rooms, larger house, more washing rooms and their own room.
To enhance housing satisfaction level of adolescents, adequate private space, privacy, sufficient size of house and common space are needed. But the size of house is closely related with economy, so that education program on the best use of small space is recommended for adolescents. And for adolescents living in small houses, local welfare facilities are needed to provide spaces for their study.
