Accurate assessment is critical to provide high quality interventions. Recently, assessment in early intervention and early childhood special education (EI/ECSE) have more focused on developmentally appropriate practices, authenticity, congruency among hat is assessed, what is taught, and what is evaluated (i.e., linked system), family involvement, and multidisciplinary approach.
The purpose of the study was to review the concept, current best practices, a variety of assessment tools, and related problems and future directions regarding assessment in EI/ECSE. In this paper, the concept of assessment was viewed by the purpose of it: screening, eligibility assessment, programming assessment, and evaluation. Best practices were viewed in terms of authenticity, family involvement, linked system. In the future, the quality of assessment will be enhanced by an effort to follow these best practices, newly devised assessment tools or re-standardized assessment tools for Korean young children, improved law provisions, administrative support, and trained personnel.
