Building on the previous research, this study attempts to explain the patterns and determinants of living arrangements among the oldest old. In particular, the study considers three types of living arrangement based on generational composition of the household - one generational household in which elderly lives alone or with spouse, two generational household composed of oldest old parents and their elderly children, and three generational household composed of oldest old parents, elderly child, and adult grandchildren. The distintion between the second and the third one contains important and meaning implication for understanding the relations among generations. The multinomial logit model analysis, using the pooled data set from 1998 and 2004 elderly survey by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, reveals that the likelihood of living in one generational household is significantly affected by various factors considered in the study. The likelihood is positively related to health and economic resources. In the meanwhile, the likelihood of living in two generational household rather than in three generational household did not show patterns as clear as in the likelihood of living in one generation, although some factors turn out to be significant. This may be so because, for the oldest old in either two generational household or three generational household, the primary care giver would be their aged children. The study suggests further research for more comprehensive understanding of living arrangements of the oldest old.
