이 글의 목적은, 현대사회가 ‘욕망과 자본주의의 악순환’으로 인해 환경위기의 심화, 사회불평등의 심화, 사회갈등의 심화 및 전쟁 가능성의 증가, 그리고 자기소외 및 자아상실감의 증대 등과 같은 사회문제를 결코 해결하지 못하고 있다고 전제하고, 그 대안으로 불교의 중도와 ‘또 다른 진보’의 선순환 모델을 모색해 보는 데 있다.
이를 위해 이 글에서는 발상의 전환에 기초하여 ‘욕망과 자본주의의 악순환’을 변증법적으로 지양할 수 있는 선순환 모델을 구성할 수 있는 두 가지 차원, 즉 행위론적 차원과 사회구조적 차원을 검토해 보았다. 그것이 바로 불교의 중도와 ‘또 다른 진보’의 내용이었다. 여기에서 ‘또 다른 진보’란 근대성을 전제한 각종 진보이론과는 다른 의미의 진보를 의미하며, 그러한 점에서 탈근대적 진보라 할 수 있다. 그런데 다행스럽게도 근대성을 넘어서는 탈근대성과 불교는 사상적으로 친화성을 지니고 있음이 어느 정도 밝혀진 바 있다. 또한 이 두 가지가 추구하는 목표는 GNP로 대표되는 물질적 성장이 아니라 삶의 행복이었다. 삶의 행복을 가능하게 하는 구체적인 조건에 있어서도 두 가지는 다음과 같은 몇 가지 공통점을 가지고 있었다. 즉 사회적 배제의 극복, 사회적 교호성의 증대, 친환경적(생태적) 생활 등이었다. 게다가 우리는 행위론적 차원으로서의 중도와 사회구조적 차원의 ‘또 다른 진보’는 서로서로가 보완될 때 보다 실현 가능성이 크다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
결국 이 글은 최소한 ‘욕망과 자본주의의 악순환’을 변증법적으로 지양할 수 있는 대안적 모델로서 ‘중도와 또 다른 진보의 선순환 모델’을 규범적인 차원에서 어느 정도 설득력 있게 재구성한 셈이다. 물론 이러한 이론적 구성이 구체적인 현실 속에서 얼마나 구현될 수 있을 것인지에 대해서는 아무도 분명한 대답을 제시할 수 없다. 그러나 욕망과 자본주의의 악순환이 우리의 미래를 행복으로 이끌지 못하는 한, 대안 찾기는 계속될 수밖에 없을 것이다. 이 글이 새로운 대안 찾기의 징검다리가 되기를 기대해 본다.

The purpose of this study is to try to look for a model to resolve the social problems involving environmental crisis, social inequality and alienation which is derived from ‘a kind of vicious circle of actor's lust and capitalist development. In this study, we call the model 'Virtuous circle of Buddhist Middle-Way and Another development'. Of course, here Buddhist Middle-Way is opposed to actor's lust and the concept of Another development which a famous sociologist Björn Hettne has called it is opposed to capitalist development.
To achieve the purpose, first of all we have critically reviewed three development theories and Asian Value thesis. And we find the fact that these theories are not able to settle the social problems involving environmental crisis, social inequality and alienation. Because of this and to try to look for a new model, 'Virtuous circle of Buddhist Middle-Way and Another development', at the theoretical level we showed the affinity of Buddhism and post-modernism as an alternative of modernity. Also. at the empirical level, we found that Buddhist Middle-Way and Another development have various common and supplementary points including the opposition of the social exclusion, social reciprocity, ecological mode of life.
This facts means the possibility of 'Virtuous circle of Buddhist Middle-Way and Another development'. But possibility is different from realization. None the less, as far as vicious circle of actor's lust and capitalist development continue, we can't but look for an alternative. we shall expect for this study to contribute to the looking for.
