The present study attempts to investigate how interlanguage grammar differs from loanword grammar toward vowel epenthesis in terms of the constraint hierarchy proposed by Prince & Smolensky (1993) and McCarthy & Prince (1995). Previous research in vowel epenthesis focuses on either interlanguage or loanword adaptation, but not both. Hardly at all do they investigate similarities and differences toward vowel epenthesis between interlanguage phonology and loanword phonology. Given this, this paper proposes that Korean speakers facilitate two different types of constraint hierarchies when they pronounce target words―one controlled by interlanguage grammar and the other by loanword grammar. Both in interlanguage and the adaptation of loanwords the voiceness of a coda stop is the most crucial factor in vowel epenthesis. However, interlanguage phonology differs from loanword phonology in that the tenseness of a preceding vowel is a less important factor than the voiceness of a coda stop; vowel epenthesis occurs infrequently. By contrast, in loanword adaptation, the tenseness of a preceding vowel is as significant as the voiceness of a coda stop; in most cases a vowel is inserted.
