Purpose: The purpose of this is a descriptive research study was to understand the relationship between stress, depression, musculoskeletal pain, and fatigue among nursing students in clinical practice. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire survey was administered 197 nursing students in clinical practice who understood and accepted the purpose of this study. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé’s test, and multiple regression, Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: The results revealed that nursing practice stress, depression, and musculoskeletal pain were generally related to satisfaction of major. Nursing practice stress showed a positive correlation with depression (r=.474, p <.001) and fatigue (r=.459, p <.001). Furthermore, depression showed a statistically significant negative correlation with musculoskeletal pain (r=− 1.82, p <.010), and a positive correlation with fatigue (r=463, p<.001). The significant predictors of fatigue for nursing students were depression (β=.316, p <.001) and nursing practice stress (β=.309, p=.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study show that fatigue is related to depression and nursing practice stress among nursing in clinical practice. These results can be used as preliminary data to develop interventions that will help reduce nursing practice stress and depression among students, and to seek ways to improve clinical practice education.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the depressive symptoms of college students associated with the limited physical and social activities during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: A web-based survey was conducted with a standardized e-questionnaire generated using the Google form. The web-link was distributed to college students through the social media platform, Facebook, to obtain data on the levels of physical and social activities and depressive symptoms owing to strict social distancing measures adopted for coronavirus prevention. Physical and social activities and depressive symptoms were assessed by the Korean version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form, measured on a 0-to-100 numerical rating scale, and Center for Epidemiology Studies Short Depression Scale, respectively. Results: A total of 261 university students participated in this survey. The median score of depressive symptoms was 3.0 (IQ1,3=2.0, 5.0), with 61.3% experiencing depression using the cut-off point≥3. The levels of physical activity were classified as level 1(inactive group), 27.2%, level 2 (minimally active group), 42% to level 3 (health-enhancing group), 29.9%. Depressive symptoms were not significantly different by physical activity levels (H=5.01, p =.081). The median score of perceived restriction in social activity was 70.0 (50.0, 80.0), suggesting that increased perceived social activity restriction was associated with increased likelihood of depression (OR=1.012, CI=1.001, 1.023). Conclusion: Owing to social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, depressive symptoms in college students were substantial. Notably, depressive symptoms increased with more perceived restrictions in social activity, suggesting the urgent need to address college students mental health during this global crisis of the COVID-19.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the meaning of a nurse s nursing volunteering experiences in Daegu during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this qualitative case study, data were collected through an in-depth interview with one nurse regarding her nursing volunteering from December 9 to 20, 2020. The interview lasted about 120 min. The participant was a woman in her early 30s, worked at a general hospital for 7 years, and was a housewife who resigned due to childbirth two years ago and has one child. Results: Five theme clusters emerged from the data as follows: 1) Hearing news of a medical disaster 2) Nursing volunteer support decisions 3) Visiting a disaster scene 4) Impression at the scene of disaster 5) Nursing volunteering to be a thinking life. Conclusion: Nursing volunteering served as an opportunity to grow further by thinking about the need and value of volunteering. The results of this study can be a guide for nurses participating in nursing volunteering.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare interviews on self-management experiences in patients with the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using structured self-management measurement tools (SMTs). Methods: Secondary analysis of interview data was conducted for the frequency of symptom monitoring items and management in daily life and during acute exacerbation (AE). The interview contents were compared with the categories and items of the three COPD SMTs selected through a systematic review. Results: Daily symptom monitoring included 13 symptoms, such as dyspnea, coughing, and sputum. Regarding daily self-care, five categories including ‘disease prevention’, ‘exercise’, ‘medication’, ‘diet’, and ‘rest’, and 13 items were identified. Symptoms of AE included 12 symptoms, such as dyspnea at rest, coughing, and dyspnea during exercise. In terms of AE management, four categories including ‘medication’, ‘medical service’, ‘enough rest’, and ‘breathing technique’, and eight items were identified. The categories and items of daily self-care in AE, derived from interviews, were consistent with those from SMTs. However, two items of daily self-care derived from interviews (i.e., “Take health supplements,” “Eat mainly vegetables”) were not included in the SMTs. Conclusion: The interviews revealed that COPD patients’ self-management experiences presented the categories and items of the SMTs. Further research is needed to identify the scientific evidence of the self-care items of patients with COPD not included in the SMTs. These findings should be reflected in COPD SMTs.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the correlations among college students’ knowledge, attitudes, and compliance with preventative behaviors regarding COVID-19; and compare these COVID-19-related perspectives among college students majoring in nursing, other health sciences, and non-health sciences. Methods: Using a descriptive-comparative study design, college students participated in a web-based survey using Google form. Spearman correlation coefficients and the Kruskal-Wallis test were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) to examine the correlations among the variables of knowledge, attitudes, and compliance with preventative behaviors regarding COVID-19. Further, these differences were examined among the three groups of college students. Results: A total of 400 students participated in this study (nursing, n=178; other health sciences, n=61; non-health sciences, n=161). Attitudes had a significant but mild level of correlation with compliance with preventative behaviors regarding COVID-19 (p <.001). A significant difference was found in attitudes, with nursing students and other health science students having more positive attitudes toward COVID-19 guidelines than non-health science students (H=6.63, p =.036). Conclusion: There was a significant correlation between attitudes and compliance with preventative behaviors regarding COVID-19. Meanwhile, attitudes were stronger in college students majoring in nursing and other health sciences, compared to students in non-health sciences. Thus, an effective strategy to increase the positive attitudes of college students toward COVID-19 is likely to promote compliance with preventative behaviors regarding COVID-19 guidelines among college students. In particular, it should target college students majoring in other disciplines than nursing and other health sciences.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of walking meditation on cancer patients suffering from depression and their quality of life (QoL) in a long-term care hospital. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group and a pretest-posttest design. Forty-nine cancer patients living in a long-term care hospital participated in the study. The experimental group (n=24) received the 2-week walking meditation program while the control group (n=25) received no such treatment. They all answered questionnaires on depression and QoL. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS PC+ 26.0 through paired t-tests, independent t-tests, and ANCOVA. Results: There were significant differences in depression (paired t= −3.944, p =.001) and QoL (paired t=2.443, p =.023) in the experimental group on pretest-posttest. Also, there were significant differences in both depression (F=8.302, p =.001) and QoL (t=2.360, p =.024) between the two groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that the walking meditation program has positive effects on the depression suffered by cancer patients as well as on their QoL in a long-term care hospital. Thus, this program can be utilized as an effective nursing intervention for cancer patients in long-term care hospitals.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the emotional labor experiences of home visiting nurses in reaching-out community centers focusing on place and gender. Methods: Ten home visiting nurses in Seoul were recruited for the study. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews. Results: First, the change of place is not simply a spatial change from the healthcare institution to the home. The spatial change affects the mission, or role, of the home visiting nurse, and there are also expectations and attitudes about home visiting nurses. During this kind of change, gender specific sociocultural norms and stereotypes affect the emotional labor of home visiting nurses. Second, gender is related to ignorance and violence faced by home visiting nurses. This type of experience increases the emotional labor of theses nurses. Partial amelioration of the working environment cannot solve this situation. Conclusion: This study suggests that institutional and sociocultural changes are needed, in order to transform the asymmetric inter-relationship between home visiting nurses and citizens into an equal inter-relationship.

Purpose: This study aimed to understand the level of vocational key competence and educational needs of nurses working in hospitals in Gwangju. Methods: A descriptive research design was employed to examine 148 clinical nurses using a questionnaire developed by Joo, Park, and Jin (2010). The questionnaire consisted of 69 questions rated on a five-point scale with eight competence factors (problem solving, basic mathematics, resource and information technology utilization, communication, interpersonal relationship, understanding of organization and culture, self-management, and career development). Results: (1) The average level of vocational key competence was 3.51 points, with the results of individual factors as follows: communication (3.75), career development (3.70), self-management (3.64), interpersonal relationship (3.64), problem solving (3.46), resource and information technology utilization (3.31), understanding of organization and culture (3.27), and basic mathematics (3.19). (2) Nurses’ educational need (demand) for vocational key competence was high, with an average of 3.83 points: self-management (3.98), career development (3.98), communication (3.96), interpersonal relationship (3.85), problem solving (3.77), resource and information technology utilization (3.71), understanding of organization and culture (3.70), and basic mathematics (3.53). (3) The analysis of sub-categories revealed that the most important factor was professional ethics. (4) Significant results were obtained for the over-41 age group, married nurses, and clinical career. Conclusion: The results of this study can be used as basic data for developing an improved nursing curriculum.

Purpose: To understand the differences in class participation and satisfaction according to the general and learning characteristics of nursing students participating in online classes. Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, Google Forms was used to survey 74 nursing students from August to September 2020. Results: For the majority of the participants (79.7%), usual bedtime was between 1 and 3 AM. Further, 52.7% of the participants woke up between 10 AM and 12 PM. Regarding learning style, more than half of students favored diffusion. Participation in and satisfaction with online classes did not significantly differ by general and learning characteristics. However, students who were able to preview the class content for over 10 minutes displayed significantly higher in class satisfaction than those with a usual preview time of less than 10 minutes. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate the significance of a fixed preview time not only to increase participation in and satisfaction with online classes but also to help nursing students establish regular life and learning habits.
