Objective: This study investigated whether executive function has a significant relationship to concrete, picture, and language clue tasks of the arithmetic story problem-solving ability, and its effects. Methods: The participants in the study were 112 young children at childcare centers. The following methods were used to evaluate executive function: Day-Night/Flag-Raising tasks, DCCS tasks, and digit span-reverse digit span methods. To measure the arithmetic story problem-solving ability concrete, picture, and language clue tasks were evaluated. Results: First, the higher the child’s age, the higher their executive function and arithmetic story problem-solving abilities were. Second, there is a significant positive correlation between a young child’s executive function and arithmetic story problem-solving ability. Third, when the task presentation method varied for concrete, picture, and language clue tasks, the effect of the subordinate factor of the execution function of the arithmetic story problem-solving ability also varied. Conclusion/Implications: Analysis confirmed the relationship between young children’s executive function and arithmetic story problem-solving ability. The results are meaningful in showing that the sub-factors of the executive function have different influences on concrete, picture, and language clue tasks of the arithmetic story problem-solving ability.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the moderating effect of elementary school students’ perception of open communication with their parents in relationship to smartphone dependency and school adjustment. Methods: Participants included 300 fifth and sixth graders attending P and A elementary schools in Gyeonggi Province. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed to analyze data. The level of significance was set at p < .05 for all analyses. Results: The results of the present study are as follows: First, male students showed higher levels of smartphone dependency than female students, and students’ smartphone dependency increased according to age. The students’ smartphone dependency was negatively associated with their school adjustment and their perception of open communication with their parents. Second, the students’ perception of open communication with their fathers was found to moderate the relationship between smartphone dependency and school adjustment. Conclusion/Implications: These findings indicate that open communication between parents and their elementary school-aged children can buffer the adverse effects of smartphone dependency on school adjustment. This study provides implications for parent education and counseling to improve parent-child communication and subsequently build strong, positive family relationships.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to examine the moderating role of childcare teachers’ sense of humor in the relationship between their job stress and happiness Methods: Participants were 294 childcare teachers working at 83 childcare centers located in Busan and Gyeongnam. Teachers completed a rating scale in order to examine their demographic variables, job stress, sense of humor, and happiness. The collected data were analyzed using product-moment correlation and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: Childcare teachers’ job stress was negatively correlated with their happiness. And childcare teachers’ sense of humor had a positive relationship with their happiness. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the interaction of childcare teachers’ job stress and sense of humor predicted their happiness. Childcare teachers’ job stress was significantly associated with their happiness among those who demonstrated the lowest level of sense of humor. Childcare teachers’ job stress had no relationship with their happiness, especially for those with the highest level of sense of humor Conclusion/Implications: We suggested that having a sense of humor might be valuable for childcare teachers in order to buffer the link between their job stress and happiness.
