초록보기
Negative prefixation in Old English has been an issue having little interest in the morphological field of the language. It has been briefly treated in OE reference grammars (Sweet 1891, Wright and Wright 1925, Koziol 1937, Jespersen 1942, Quirk and Wrenn 1974, Kastovsky 1992, among others), and the descriptions of the negative prefixes found in the studies are superficial and limited to a listing of their meanings. This paper attempts to provide a unified semantic account of OE 18 negative prefixes (and- ǣ-, æf-, be-, for-/fer-, gēan-, med-, mis-, of-, ofer-, on(an)-, or- sām-, un-, under-, wan-/won, wiþ-, wiþer-) on the basis of the semantic system established by Hamawand (2009). In accordance with the system, I make two theoretical assumptions: firstly, the meanings of a negative prefix gather around a prototypical sense, from which the peripheral ones are derived; secondarily, negative prefixes group into 8 semantic domains (e.g., opposition, distinction) based on their meanings, and each prefix in the same domain has its own specificity, contrasting itself with the other members. The results of this article reveal that the polysemy of each prefix, the relationship between multiple meanings of a prefix, and the semantic relationship between the negative prefixes can be explained in a unified and systematic way.

The comparison of the suffixes -less and -free in Dixon (2014) can be considered as a competition in which they simultaneously act as ‘rivals’ (Lindsay and Aronoff 2013). This study endeavors to uncover a novice description for the semantic distributions of the negative suffixes -less and -free by corpora online in order to explore how their dynamic rivalry mechanism runs. The results show that when -free begins to be involved in the rivalry, in order to tolerate the occurrence of the synonymous counterpart, both -less and -free endeavor to find the niches (e.g., X1, X2) that can render them successful with connotative meanings, such as X1-less with the meaning ‘preference o r permis sion for the existence (of the referent)’ (M ppfe), and X2-free with the meaning ‘preference for the nonexistence (of the referent)’ (M pfn). Moreover, the individual preference for the stems that endow the suffixes with new denotative meanings also gives them chances to survive in the competition.

The use of corpora to analyse literary texts has concentrated on prose and the main focus has been on the relevance between keywords and themes. This corpus study intends to expand the research scope to include poetry. For this purpose, two collections of poems, John Donne’s Holy sonnets and George Herbert’s The Temple were chosen and converted into separated corpora. Corpus analysis using WordSmith tool was conducted to identify similarities and differences of the two corpora. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, it could be inferred that Holy Sonnets belongs to lyric poetry, whereas The Temple belongs to didactic poetry. Second, Holy Sonnets represents the theme of God and death, whereas The Temple represents the theme of God and love. Third, while Holy Sonnets has a negative tone about death and love, The Temple has a negative tone about death but a positive tone about God and love. In summary, the two collections reflect the fact that the two writers are metaphysical poets and share similar backgrounds. As such, corpus analysis can be utilized for poetic text and could be considered a new approach to understanding poetry.

초록보기
This study examined Korean ESL (English as a Second Language) learners’ production of English vowels (/i/, /ɪ/, /ɛ/, /æ/, /ɑ/, /ʌ/, /ɔ/, /u/), focusing on the acoustic properties of the vowels and speech intelligibility. Twenty-three Korean ESL learners, divided into two groups based on their English-learning experiences (high-proficiency group vs. intermediate-proficiency group), completed a vowel production task in which the first and second formant values (F1, F2) of vowels were measured and compared to the productions of native English speakers. Another group of native English listeners evaluated the speech intelligibility of Korean ESL learners’ production of English vowels. Furthermore, the correlation between the acoustic properties of the English vowels and speech intelligibility was investigated. The results showed that F1, F2 distribution patterns and speech intelligibility patterns were somewhat different according to the native English speaker group, the high-proficiency group, and the intermediate-proficiency group. The acoustic properties, especially F1, tended to influence the speech intelligibility but the correlation between them was varied according to vowel types and Korean ESL learners’ English-learning experiences.

Avoidance behavior has been one of the interesting topics in the field of learner behavior studies. However, due to the difficulty arising from the detection of avoided constructions, avoidance behavior has been rather less studied for the last few decades. The current study is geared towards applying collostructional analysis for the precise detection of Korean EFL learners’ avoidance of English progressive aspect. The results indicate that Korean EFL learners tend to use the ing form as deverbal adjective, gerundive nominal, and phrases rather than as the progressives. As the cause of avoidance behavior, the semantic and affective factors were suggested. Following the analysis of Korean EFL learners’ avoidance behavior, the pedagogical implications of the present study are discussed. We expect that this study can reinvigorate an interest on avoidance by showing that the collostructional approach helps detect L2 learners’ avoidance behavior.
