This study aims to analyze the process by which readers of literary works, facing the absence of absolute truth and the impossibility of reproducing reality, critically read and accept literary works through “unreliable narrators” in the text. To this end, I have analyzed Flaubert’s Parrot by Julian Barnes, a representative post-modern writer who denies stable and unchanging truths. Tracing and recording Flaubert’s life, the narrators contribute to breaking down the boundary between reality and fiction by mixing historical facts with fictional imagination. This research attempts to scrutinize the influence of the unreliable narrators’ memories and their narrative methods on discovering the truth. It also explores the role of modern readers who can create their own meaning of literary texts through their critical reading activities.

This essay discusses Kaite O’Reilly’s disability aesthetics, concentrating on her monologue, In Water I’m Weightless, which is a result of her endeavors to find new theatre languages and alternative dramaturgies that can redress mainstream representations of disability. What she terms ‘d’ monologues consist of a series of first-person narratives which present multiple bodies and languages voicing the lived experiences of people with various disabilities. The play frequently involves directly addressing the audience and alternating between oral and “visual” languages, in order to upbraid non-disabled people’s prejudices as well as encourage differently-abled spectators to embrace their identities. As such, O’Reilly’s play allows the spectators to see things anew, and, more significantly, to form a sense of community in the process. This is not a homogeneous community, however, because of the “fear” of disability among the spectators, with narrators overtly differentiating “they” and “we.” The play, therefore, calls for a new community of spectators of differing bodily abilities, for the stage is where a community, albeit one yet to come, can be imagined.

Like violence, a law designed for national safety could threaten a minority group or an individual. People who don’t have any legal positions appear to be in an exceptional realm of the law where every law for them is suspended, but they are still bound by the law with punishment of expulsion. They can not be sacrificed or sentenced to death but can be easily murdered because they are not under constituted power. We can call them Homo Sacer. Richard in King Richard Ⅱ expels his cousin, Bullingbrook to retain his power. Contrary to his expectations, the expulsion of Bullingbrook causes him to lose his sovereignty. Giorgio Agamben explains that if state of exception continues, it becomes a new rule. Then, the former law do not work and everything comes to an end. Richard breaks English law and makes exceptions in his own kingdom. As a result, newly formed ‘constituting power’ with Bullingbrook builds a new sovereign power and makes Richard become bare life. The famous Shakespearean uprising story reveals how sovereignty moves and why Homo Sacer should not be murdered.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways in which Colson Whitehead attempts to make a poignant critique of the problematics of the white people’s violence toward the black slaves, demonstrating the struggle for freedom that black slaves show in his Pulitzer prize-winning novel, The Underground Railroad (2016). Whitehead presents the plight of the black slaves’ and their struggle for freedom by adopting the speculative neo-slave narrative genre. The underground railroad in Whitehead’s novel is not an imaginary or symbolic route that the black slaves used to escape from the bondage of slavery with the aid of the white abolitionists, but includes actual trains and tunnels. Cora, the protagonist of the novel as well as the granddaughter Ajarri and the daughter of Mable, heroically escapes from the Randall plantation in Georgia to travel to South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Indiana, and finally somewhere to the North. She went through various ordeal because of the slave catcher Ridgeway, who is the embodiment of the manifest destiny. By fighting against Ridgeway, Cora finally escapes from him and from the slavery system, reaching to the land of freedom. I want to emphasize that Whitehead’s novel is not just a critique of the American slavery system, but it is also a scathing critique of the violence by white supremacy under the present government.

Pearl S. Buck, born in America but who spent most of her life in China, is considered a spiritual hybrid with an ‘in-between’ identity. Most of her works are included in the category of interracial literature because they deal with the issues of interracial marriage and hybrids. She has a special concern for ‘Amerasians,’ the mixed-race children born between American men and Asian women during the Cold War period. In The Hidden Flower(1952) and The New Year(1968), Buck not only reveals her sympathy towards the plights of ‘Amerasians,’ but also subverts the 19th-century discourses of racial hybridity that claim the superiority of pure blood over mixed-race. Lennie, the mixed-race child of an American man and a Japanese woman in The Hidden Flower and Christopher, a child of an American man and a Korean woman in The New Year are portrayed as genetically superior hybrids in whom the mental and physical strengths of East and West are united. Through these novels, she also criticizes the myth of ‘racial purity’ rampant at that time in the American South with the assertion that “all cultures are hybrids and amalgams because miscegenation is going on constantly between all peoples.”

This paper examines the alternation between to-infinitives and the prepositions on/in plus gerund to investigate the hypothesis of ‘Great Complement Shift’ (GCS), i.e. infinitival complement is being replaced by prepositional gerund over time. To support GCS, previous studies focused on the development of the preposition to plus gerund but the other prepositions have been little studied. This paper selects five matrix verbs showing alternation between to-infinitives and on/upon plus gerund (decide, resolve) or in plus gerund (delight, persist, fail; in case of fail, the prepositions of and at are also examined), and compares the frequency changes from the 1820s to the 2000s in the Corpus of Historical American English (COHA). It is found that no verbs except delight matches GCS. Therefore, The GCS hypothesis should be either abandoned or revised to explain only limited types of constructions.

This paper describes conceptual metaphor theory and cognitive neural network, showing that literary language has a great place in cognitive linguistics and science. Lakoff and Johnson claim that the cognitive unconscious is vast and intricately structured. It includes not only all our automatic cognitive operations, but also all our implicit knowledge. Metaphor is means usual that we use it automatically and unconsciously, with so little trouble that we hardly notice it. Paul Churchland suggests the representational theory from results of neural network. According to the theory of representations, the representations of our selves and world can be represented as the places of stage state spaces with the exercises of the neurons. This paper takes to research the part of representations and metaphors in Robert Frost s poetry. I try to analyze cognitive theory and the theory of representations to a poem titled “The Ax-Helve.” Thus, it can be concluded that this study suggests that critical thought in consilience of the studies should make questions as to our basic principles and give them fresh creative theories.

The paper examines the relationship between humans and nature in John Burroughs’s Wake-Robin by focusing on human emotion and perception of nature. It also studies the role of nature writing by tracing the history of American nature writing. To understand the dynamics of perception and emotion in nature writing, Wake-Robin is used as an example to illustrate how different forms of nature, such as birds, flora, and fauna, interact with the human psyche. Burroughs also uses nature, birds and their daily activities, forest, and rivers to stress the importance of respecting and protecting the ecosystem. He employs an emotional language and creates different images of nature that help readers to feel attached not only to humans but non-humans.

This study aimed to investigate the affectedness of iconicity of sequence on the positioning of after-clauses and before-clauses which express a pure temporal relationship with their main clauses. Iconicity of sequence has been considered as one of determinate factors affecting the positioning of clauses in the structures of complex sentences. The previous studies have suggested that the clause with an earlier-occurring event tend to appear sentence-initially while the clause with a later-occurring event is positioned sentence-finally. In order to examine the arrangement of clauses affected by iconicity of sequence in the contemporary use of English, this study employed a corpus for American television series viewed by native and non-native speakers of English around the world. The results show that iconicity of sequence works on the positioning of before-clauses to a considerable degree. On the other hand, the positioning of after-clauses is not heavily affected by iconicity of sequence although after-clauses describe an earlier-occurring event.

Focussing on the prototypical ditransitive verb give and the non-prototypical ditransitive verb bring, this paper aims to explore the similarities and differences in the use of English ditransitive construction between Chinese English learners and English native speakers based on the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners 2.0 (WECCL 2.0). The findings are as follows: (i) Chinese English learners prefer to use pronouns as the recipient of the ditransitive construction for both of the verbs; however, English native speakers use more NPs as the recipient for the verb give; (ii) Chinese English learners seldom use inanimate entities as the recipient of both of the verbs; (iii) Chinese English learners’ learning of the non-prototypical ditransitive verb bring is influenced by the prototypical ditransitive verb give; (iv) compared with their English counterparts, Chinese English learners tend to use more simple expressions as the theme role bearers of the ditransitive construction.
