Cybernetics, particularly second-generation cybernetics, may provide the framework for thinking and learning necessary for contemporaries living in a hyperconnected era. The educational content and teaching methods of English language and literature need to be redesigned so that students can be more familiar with the products of modern science, including AI and virtual reality. In addition, English language and literature classes should demonstrate an inclusive and receptive attitude to the common languages of science, mathematics, and machine language as well as their achievements. The core competencies in the field currently classified as humanities need to be cultivated intensively so that graduates can contribute to social organization and live a meaningful life by providing values that can be shared with engineering and business students. English language and literature education needs to reinforce the core competencies of humanities in line with modern industrial structures. It seems possible to partially consider a convergent approach with cybernetics and related management theories with aesthetic content in classes. Expanding aesthetic sensibility education into practical disciplines such as engineering and business management can also be meaningful work.

This thesis aims to examine the ethical problems of Botswana people in front of extreme natural disasters, focusing on the novel “Looking for a Rain God” by Bessie Head, a female exile writer from South Africa. This novel deals with natural disasters that threaten human survival and realistically depicts how helpless and depraved they are when the huge natural environment overwhelms Africans. In particular, Head notes what unexpected behaviors Botswanans in physical and psychological distress hang on to when faced with the worst drought that has lasted for years through “Looking for a Rain God”, In other words, it focuses on the power of drought that makes even human desperate efforts meaningless and the desperate situation of Botswana people. Furthermore, the author questions whether the act committed by the main character family can be judged by the standard of justice and ethics when faced with the worst conditions, and asks Africans who struggle between survival and justice, survival and ethics whether such a dichotomous foundation can be valid. This paper analyzes these questions and discusses what the author’s intention is to try to change the subject from race to natural environment. In addition, this thesis explores that the writer discuss the importance of the narrative of female exile writers who are mixed-race by examining what differentiated positions can be redefined in English-speaking African literature through changes in the theme.

This study aims to demonstrate how I use in college level literature classes discussion and writing built around focused questions and thought-provoking questions in order to promote ethical sensitivity toward resistance against corruption, abuses of power, and Mammonism in society. Among several literary texts that I use for this purpose, this paper focuses on Alan Alexander Milne’s “Declined with Thanks” in his essay collection Not That It Matters (1920). As for the significance of individuals’ decisions to refuse money or job opportunities that are presented for any improper motives or purposes, Milne’s essay explores the possibility of emanating from these individual decisions a social movement that resists the collusion between political power, economic power, and the media. In helping my students to understand Milne’s seemingly impossible ethical vision, I emphasize critical thinking within the social and cultural contexts. Through this study on cases of teaching Milne’s essay on resistance as ethical sensitivity, I attempt to contribute to prove the value and necessity of literature, and more broadly, humanities in our society.

This study aims to demonstrate that Toni Morrison’s ‘other mother’ and ‘other father’ are alternatives to the collapse of the African American family. The African American families were constantly vulnerable to the surveillance, oppression, and violence of their White owners during slavery, and then to the hard lines of social-economical segregation along the racial colors that continued long after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1864. Therefore, they have unwillingly been torn into matriarchal households or patriarchal households. In this historical process, the dad-space of matriarchal households or the mom-space of patriarchal households has been filled with grandparents, sisters, brothers, aunts, cousins, and neighbors as ‘other parents.’ Morrison represents other mother and other father in view of the painful history of African Americans. In Beloved which is set in the early days of slavery, Nan, one-handed female slave, is other mother who takes child-care responsibilities for the daughter of her peer who is forced into labour exploitation in the fields. Aunt Rosa in Tar Baby, and Sandler Giblons in Love, which are set in the days as same as our contemporaries, evoke the historical tradition of other parents in the African American culture. Aunt Rosa fills the mom-space of a patriarchal household as a nanny who breast-feeds Son Green. Sandler takes on child-care responsibilities for his grand son, and councils him to have an un-blinded youth dating.

In Paradise Lost, the tree of knowledge can be a decisive touchstone for discerning and practicing God’s will for humans. With the tree of knowledge as the center, God conditions Adam to be a vicarious ruler who governs Eden, and Adam absolutizes God as the creator who grants him the authority and the means to rule. The tree of knowledge is at the core of the relationship between God and human beings, beyond simply the problem of knowledge derived from the tree’s name. Adam’s right understanding of the tree of knowledge is especially Milton’s core educational content about Adam. In this education of Adam, factors such as reason, free will and obedience can be verified in the process of securing the subjectivity by which Adam establishes himself as a true human being. In regard to Adam’s education, the important thing is that Adam should yearn for the presence of God himself and the Holy Being before making a decision not to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree. This is because the Divine Presence is the perfect signification of the tree of knowledge and the aggregate of all reference systems. The power to refuse the fruit of the tree of knowledge depends not on Adam’s effort but on the presence of God, and the initiative of whether or not to eat the fruit of this tree belongs to God, not Adam. In fact, God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is not a law but an ethic, a matter not of coercion but of spontaneity. Man cannot be saved by the law and the efforts to obey it, but he can achieve everlasting and real life only by the presence and love of the Holy God. God alone can guide Adam on the path to life and salvation, the ultimate meaning of the tree, overcoming the temptations of the tree of knowledge and its superficial signs. In conclusion, the lessons that Adam must realize through the tree of knowledge come down to the question of who the Holy Being is and who Adam is, which is also the essence of Adam’s education on the tree of knowledge.

This essay first raises a question about the difference between the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation’s official plan-Subject Pedagogy (25~35%) and Subject Contents (75~65%), and the reality of Teacher Appointment Exam in the distribution ratio of Pedagogy and Contents in English subject. Not only questioning the difference, it also disputes the validity of giving a large portion of the test to the area of English Education to the extent of 47.5% (2016-17), among English Education, Linguistics, Literature, and General English. Second, commenting on the domain of English Literature which constitutes the lowest percentage in Teacher Appointment Exam, it contends that the present situation of English education leans too much to the education for profit or economic growth. It points out that excessive concentration on the education for profit in teaching English could result in the lowering of English proficiency, especially students’ reading ability and its accompanying thinking ability. Therefore, this essay pronounces on the necessity of invigorating English literature in EFL learning process since English literature as coupling English language and the humanities is crucial in the development of critical thinking and human compassion, as well as English proficiency. As a case study of English literature class for boosting students’ creativity and human compassion, it introduces English & American poetry class practiced with online discussion which was actualized due to the coronavirus pandemic. Lastly, this essay proposes the reform of English Teacher Appointment Exam such as making questions out of the selected must-read books so that teacher candidates could read English literature texts and collaborate in forming creative and interactive classroom environment with poems, novels, and dramas in the era of the fourth industrial revolution.

This study selects Jerry Spinelli’s Maniac Magee, focusing on how the protagonist Maniac maintains relationships with others and gains a mature view of society. It analyzes Maniac’s childhood as an orphan based on Adler’s individual psychology and how he becomes socially interested in racial issues. Adler’s Individual Psychology, in which childhood determines the structure of life, is a theory that provides a close approach to analyzing Maniac’s poor environment and his resulting character. Maniac, who has no stereotypes about society or skin color, opens his eyes little by little to the invisible perception that society gives. The stereotypes create a racial boundary and source of prejudice, dividing the east and west side of town. Maniac has an invisible sense of inferiority. Adler says it is not a bad thing itself, so people try to overcome their inferiority complex and to build their self-esteem. Maniac’s actions and practices help break the prejudice and racial conflicts. Maniac’s social interest in both the black and white communities serves to help unite them. This study is meaningful to find Maniac’s potential ability to overcome his inferiority complex and expand his social interest through the process of self-growth.

Low levels of empathy in university students has become an increasing problem worldwide, including in South Korea, triggering an empathy crisis. Various teaching methods and strategies have been employed in the Korean classroom with positive results, including teaching empathy through English literature. However, few studies have explored the combination of English literature and creative writing in English to teach and build cognitive empathy. This study presents the teaching strategies and methods of a class called Critical and Creative Textual Studies, which combines a unique fusion of analysis and interpretation of English literary texts combined with creative thinking and writing practice. Students first critically analyzed assigned texts, and then engaged in creative writing exercises designed to encourage perspective taking. They were then given a choice of which text to creatively respond to in writing. Three of these creative responses were then analyzed for evidence and extent of cognitive empathy through various analytical techniques including perspective taking, emotive language, level of immersion, type of description and detail, syntax, repetition, verb tense, figurative language, and showing vs. telling. All three showed the potential for experiencing and achieving cognitive empathy. Student survey responses supported these positive results. It is hoped that this study will open up and expand the possibilities for creative writing in the English in the Korean classroom, and generate discussion regarding strategies and methods for increasing empathy among university students.
