This study was conducted to compare the nutrient intake of the residents in Chungbuk province based on 20102013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The proportions of people who consumed less than Estimated Average Requirements for selected nutrients depending on sex, age, area of residence, body mass index, smoking, and drinking frequency were also determined in order to identify a high-risk group in Chungbuk province. The mean intakes of energy, calcium, and vitamin C of Chungbuk residents were significantly lower than the national average, while the mean intake of sodium was significantly higher, when those were expressed as the percentages of dietary reference intakes. Women, those aged 1218 years, those older than 75 years, those with lower levels of education and income were identified as a high-risk group for inadequate nutrient intake. Smokers and frequent drinkers were identified as a high-risk group for excessive sodium intake. Our study indicated that high rates of drinking, smoking, and hypertension in Chungbuk province, as reported by the Community Health Survey, may be associated with excessive sodium consumption. The strategies to increase the intakes of calcium and vitamin C, and reduce sodium consumption are needed to improve the nutritional status and health of the residents in Chungbuk province.

The Basic Law on Food Education (Shokuiku) was enacted in Japan in 2005. The Basic Law defines “Food Education” as acquisition of knowledge about food and nutrition as well as the ability to make appropriate food choices based on experiences related to food, in order to practice a healthy diet. The law stipulates that food education be encouraged through formulation and implementation of the Basic Plan for promoting food education. This study examines the background of enactment of Basic Law on Food Education, and analyzes the first (20062010), the second (20112015), and the third (20162020) Basic Plans for promoting food education. Information was obtained from the homepages of the concerned government offices, such as the Cabinet Office’s Food Safety Commission, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. The Basic Plan had four elements: fundamental policies, objectives, comprehensive measures for promoting food education, and other requirements for comprehensive and consistent implementation of the plan. The Basic Law on Food Education stipulates the responsibilities and duties of the national government, local governments, educators, farmers and fishermen, food-related business groups, and the Japanese public. The most important factors are the consistency and effectiveness of the policies in the Basic Plans. In order to promote dietary education as a national movement, it is necessary for government and local public organizations to set a common goal and cooperate to achieve it. The nutritional and health statuses of people can be improved by practicing healthy eating habits through steadily effective dietary education policies. Our study is expected to be used as reference for dietary education policy in Korea.

In this study, castella were prepared using different replacement levels of jujube powder (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% of weak flour) to study the physical and sensory characteristics of castella made with jujube powder. The following results were obtained. The gravity of samples was increased by adding jujube powder. The height and volume of the samples decreased through the addition of jujube powder. The weight of the castella dough and baking loss were significantly increased by increasing the amount of added jujube powder. The appearance of a cross section of castella seemed to become coarser as the amount of jujube powder added to it was increased and the height and volume of the sample decreased. A sensory assessment of castella prepared using different amounts of added jujube powder using hedonic scale showed that the appearance of the experimental samples was significantly worse than that of the control, regardless of the added levels of jujube powder. There were no significant differences in the flavor, texture, and overall acceptance across samples, and the preference toward taste tended to decrease as the amount of jujube powder added increased. However, energy, carbohydrates, and lipids were reduced and dietary fiber was increased significantly with the increase in the substitution ratio of jujube powder.

The aim of this study was to examine adolescents’ awareness of Vegetarian Day (VD), their menu preferences, and their perceptions of VD in school lunches. The subjects were 577 students attending a middle school located in Gyeonggi do. The self-administered questionnaire, conducted from December 20, 2014, to January 7, 2015, consisted of general characteristics, menu preferences, and perceptions of vegetarian diet and VD. Survey data were compared between two groups according to whether students wanted VD (362 want, 215 do not want). As many as 15.3% of students answered that they were not aware of VD in their school lunches. Without significant differences between groups, only 62.9% of the subjects answered that they were encouraged to eat more vegetables at home and 10.1% answered that their parents were vegetarian. More of those in the “do notwant VD” group answered that they disliked to a great extent or tended to dislike VD menus compared with students in the “want VD” group (51.6% vs. 7.7%, respectively, p<0.01) and answered with a higher preference for a baked menu and a lower preference for namul (p<0.05). Almost half of the students in the “do not want VD” group answered that namul was their least preferred menu compared with 34.9% of their counterparts (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the groups in their perception of the most important advantage of eating a vegetarian diet;however, the best results for VD were different between groups, namely, more students in the “do not want VD” group answered that VD helps preserve the environment and save animal lives, whereas their counterparts answered that VD helps people become more aware of nutritional aspects and various tastes (p<0.05). Reasons for not wanting VD (33.5% for “nothing desirable to eat on VD” and 26.0% for “usually don’t dislike vegetarian diet but don’t like the menu on VD”) suggested that developing recipes and menus may improve students’ satisfaction with VD menus.

Quality jobs are an important driver of increased labour force participation, productivity and economic performance. Work is also strongly related to individuals’ well-being and quality of life. Quality of job, thus, attracts more attention both from researchers and policy-makers. The purpose of this study was to review elderly care workers’ job quality focusing on level of payment, job security, adequacy of working time, level of training, and other benefits which are often used as job quality indicators by international labour organizations and in previous studies. Focus group interviews (FGI) were conducted with five workers. The results show that the job quality of elderly care workers falls far short of the standards for a decent job. Although these jobs may provide an alternative to re-entry for female workers who had once stopped their careers, this poor quality job has, over all, serious negative effects on care workers job prospects as well as on the occupational prestige of social service workers in general. Elderly care workers who support the diverse needs of communities, families and individuals definitely deserve better rewards and recognition in both standardized job descriptions and through a proper payment system.

This study examined the relative contributions of socio-demographic factors, physical health, mental health, family communication, and family conflict to family happiness across age groups. The participants of the study were 560 adults having at least one child under the age of 18. Data were analyzed through hierarchical regression using SPSS 18.0. For participants in their thirties, physical health and family communication were positively associated with family happiness, whereas family conflict was negatively associated with family happiness. For participants in their forties, family happiness was associated with family communication, mental health, and family conflict, in that order. Family monthly income in particular showed a substantial positive association with family happiness for participants in their fifties. Further, family communication, family conflict, and mental health were, in that order, related to family happiness for participants in their fifties. Family communication was the most strongly associated with family happiness regardless of the age group. These findings extend previous research on happiness in cultural contexts.

The purpose of this study was to research future prospects for upcycle fashion design through an analysis of “RE;CODE,” a Korean upcycle fashion brand. This study’s methodology involved collecting and analyzing relevant books, magazines, newspapers, and materials from other media (the Internet and broadcast) in comparison with preceding studies. Three hundred and sixty-four photos from the 2012 F/W to the 2016 F/W collections on RE;CODE’s website were analyzed. Topics such as color matching, fabric mix, and deconstruction and reconstruction aspects were considered along with the design elements of silhouette, color, material, and item combination, commonly emphasized in upcycle fashion design. The following results were found. An H silhouette with a modern sensibility was most common, and the prevalence of an O silhouette has increased recently, reflecting the oversize trend. In terms of item combination, the combination of outerwear, shirt, and pants was prevalent. There were many cases of fabrics mixing, which reflected the characteristics of upcycle design and expressed the uniqueness and scarcity value of an experimental material mix. Achromatic colors dominated, emphasizing modern sensibilities and the influence of color matching with various monotones. Because many patterns were expressed using the deconstruction and reconstruction of details, patternless fabrics were the most common, but checks, stripes, and camouflage also appeared. Deconstruction and reconstruction in upcycling were most common in tops, in sleeves or peplums, and, in some cases of color matching, with the design line on the bodice. RE;CODE demonstrated characteristic designs using fabric matching among various fabrics and unique experimental combinations, features which contribute to the development of upcycle fashion and have positive effects on environmental preservation.

This study investigated the effects of advertising endorsed by Hallyu and Chinese stars in the Chinese fashion market. Two Chinese fashion brands (Semir and Yishion) were selected, and stimulus of ads were developed. A self-administered questionnaire was developed for data collection, and a total of 78 responses were obtained from Chinese students enrolled in universities in Korea. Factor analysis revealed that star attributes consisted of three factors for both Korean and Chinese celebrities in the ads: expertise, credibility, and attractiveness. In the ads endorsed by Hallyu stars, attractiveness had a significant effect on attitudes toward the brand; attitudes and attachment toward the brand significantly affected purchase intentions for the fashion brands. In the ads endorsed by Chinese stars, credibility had a significant effect on brand attachment, which led to the intent to purchase the fashion brands. This study also discussed the managerial implications for developing star marketing in Chinese market from a global perspective.

This study was to predict the effects of mobile coupons on consumer engagement, impulse buying, and purchasing behaviors for fashion brands. A self-administered questionnaire was developed for data collection and included attributes of mobile coupons, consumer engagement, impulse buying, and consumer behavior (brand loyalty, brand switching, and intention to use a mobile coupon). A total of 142 usable responses were obtained from university students who had redeemed a mobile coupon for the purchase of fashion brands. The sample represented a greater number of females than males. The findings demonstrated that the attributes of mobile coupons consisted of three factors: enjoyment, ease of use, and usefulness. Of these factors, enjoyment significantly influenced consumer engagement with the mobile coupon, which led to impulse buying behavior. Brand loyalty and brand switching were also significantly influenced by consumer engagement with fashion brands’ mobile coupons. Finally, this study discussed fashion marketers’ managerial implications for developing and effectively managing mobile promotional strategies through mobile devices in the fashion retail market.

The purpose of this study is to recommend ways of preventing sick furniture syndrome by analyzing the IAQ and related factors of living spaces with new furniture. The study undertook field investigation of the concentration of TVOC, HCHO, and PM10 before and after the adoption of the new furniture at two sites, and just after the adoption of new furniture at three sites. A survey was carried out among 368 university students using a questionnaire about the experience of buying new furniture, symptoms of sick furniture syndrome, and methods of addressing sick furniture syndrome. The results of the investigation at the five sites showed that the average TVOC concentration was 6091687㎍/㎥, while HCHO was 0.040.28ppm, which exceed accepted standards. Comparisons between TVOC and HCHO levels at the different sites suggest that the factor most affecting TVOC and HCHO levels is furniture type (adhesive materials or other pollutant substances used in manufacture), rather than the size of the space, the period after new furniture adoption, or furniture size. As a result, we recommend the following: manufacturers should not ship products until pollutant substances are washed away and dust is removed; policies such as marks of certification for material grades should be enforced so that consumers can gain greater recognition of the problem.

The recent international focus on the environment has resulted in eco-friendly “green buildings” emerging in the construction industry. Green remodeling has been used in South Korea to address the energy crisis and to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The government aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by pushing for green renovation that improves buildings’ energy performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate consciousness about green remodeling and suggest trends in green remodeling through a literature review and user survey. The results indicated that respondents did not fully recognize the concept and current policies in the field of green remodeling. Green remodeling can offer energy and management cost savings in the field of housing construction. Most respondents took a positive view of the effectiveness and future prospects of green remodeling. Respondents were very interested in electric energy and natural light and considered natural lighting, insulation, and solar powered heating as important elements for current green remodeling practices. We suggest the following. First, information and public relations offerings about green remodeling are needed to raise awareness regarding the importance of green remodeling for the public as well as for experts. Second, green remodeling needs to be actively applied to both private construction and public construction. Thus, green remodeling guidelines should be developed according to buildings’ purpose, size, and form. Finally, the effectiveness of green remodeling elements is influenced by user behavior, so there is a need to educate residents about energy saving methods and equipment use. This study is expected to serve as a basis for future pilot projects for green remodeling of housing.

This study aims to classify types of full-option furniture designs and analyze design characteristics for better development of furniture for one-room type multi-family housing around campus. The study was based on empirical methodology; this included a field visit conducted by researchers, followed by surveys and in-depth interviews carried out after a critical review of previous studies. A total of nine valid responses were collected. Major findings were as follows. Users found the built-in type of furniture highly satisfactory because this type ensured that storage space was easy to secure in a narrow living space, and a clean atmosphere was created through a unified color scheme. However, since the built-in bookshelf and closet was built to the ceiling, the higher spaces could not be used effectively. The general furniture type was found to be satisfactory to the users because this type of furniture could be freely placed when users wanted to rearrange. However, the furniture finish was peeling or broken, and the color scheme was not harmonized among furniture items due to worn-out furniture. The problems with the built-in and general types of furniture were all found in the case of the mixed type. The standard built-in furniture was found to be inconvenient because it did not consider the size of adult male and female college students. When providing full-option furniture for one-room type multi-family housing, designers and providers should consider a combination of built-in and general types of furniture that allows users to efficiently use narrow spaces.

Due to distrust in Chinese products, more and more Chinese consumers are turning to “Overseas direct purchases.” According to statements by the e-commerce payment company Paypal, the number of direct purchases by Chinese citizens reached 18 million in 2013, increasing from USD 2 billion to USD 35.2 billion. It is estimated that in 2018, about 36 million people will purchase goods directly from overseas, adding up to about USD 165 billion. This study aimed to determine the factors that would cause Chinese consumers to re-purchase Korean products. We conducted a survey targeting 350 Chinese consumers from July 1, 2015, through July 6, 2015, and used SPSS Windows 18.0 to analyze the data through descriptive-statistics analysis, factor analysis, and regression analysis. The results of the study yielded the following conclusions. First, direct purchases, pleasure, and usefulness have a positive association with overseas direct purchase satisfaction. Second, direct purchase, pleasure, usefulness, and subjective scale are positively associated with the intent of re-purchase of products from overseas. Based on these results, the significance of the research is, first, that in order to capture the direct purchase market in China, production and sales businesses and distribution companies in South Korea should strive to excel in providing greater convenience, avoiding delivery delays and loss of goods etc. Second, Chinese customers who directly purchase South Korean goods are not only pragmatists who buy cheap goods but also seek pleasure through making direct purchases from abroad. Third, enterprises related to overseas direct purchase should pay attention to the word of mouth.

This study investigated levels of consumer knowledge and willingness to pay for certified farm products. Four types of certificates were selected from those managed by Korean NAQS. These werethe Organic Processed Food Certification, the GAP certification, the Agricultural Products Traceability Management System (APTMS), and the Korea Protected Geographical Indication (KPGI). In 2016, a questionnaire survey was administered to 306 housewives aged between 21 and 61 in the Greater Seoul area. Consumers’ knowledge about and their willingness to pay (WTP) for rice, apples, napa, and beef labeled with four types of certificates were measured. Results showed that 47% of the respondents understood the meaning of an organic marker but only about one third of the respondents understood the markers for GAP, geographical certificate, and traceability certificate. WTP ranged from 110% of the baseline price (for rice) to 123% (for beef); the average WTP across all the products and certificate types was 116% of their baseline prices. Among the four certificate types and four product types, WTP for organic certificates and beef were the highest. Respondents who had grown up in theSeoul area or who were employed tended to have high WTP scores, although their consumer knowledge levels about the certificates were not very high. By contrast, the group with both a high WTP score and good consumer knowledge had high household incomes compared to the other groups.
